Experts such as Richard Louv and David Suzuki have decried today's youth's increasing alienation from the natural world and its effect on the way we view the outside world. This nature deficit disorder may even be a contributing factor in climate change as people are increasingly unaware of the effect of human activity.
Outdoor education is valuable for kids who are interested in pursuing learning in the natural or environmental sciences or who simply love the outdoors. It is also very valuable for kids who are academically inclined, of course, as it can provide an important counterpoint to schoolwork, sitting at a computer or playing video games.
There are several types of camps that specialize in specific areas of learning. These include the following:
Outdoor education is a byproduct of many types of summer camps, including both day and overnight camps. A byproduct of outdoor learning is an increased understanding of the environment, issues like climate change and an alleviation of what Richard Louv has famously called nature deficit disorder.
