    The Our Kids review of Camp Ak-O-Mak

    our take

    Camp Ak-O-Mak is a truly a great Canadian camp, and it shares a pedigree with another great Canadian camp, Camp Chikopi. Both were formed as sports-centred camps at a time when that really didn’t exist in any tangible way. They were created by Matt Mann, a professional swimming coach who, among many other things, served as the coach of the US Olympic team. Swimming, naturally, was an initial focus, and it remained a highlight of the camp program, though other sports were added, all of which Mann saw as sympathetic to the program’s ideals: endurance, strength, character, and participation within a cooperative environment. Rosemary Mann Dawson, daughter of the founder, took on the directorship of the camp in 1941 and served—brilliantly, astonishingly—for the next 50 years. Her career in swimming soon became as notable as that of her father, including starting a program at the University of Michigan. While running the camp, she coached there, as well as at the University of Western Ontario. In all of that and more she was a pioneer in women’s sport, demonstrating through example what young women could accomplish and the place that sport might take in their lives; in a time when female empowerment wasn’t as central to the culture as it is, thankfully, today, Mann Dawson lead the charge. That legacy remains at the heart of the camp today. It’s a place where girls grow into a sense of their abilities in all areas of their lives, are encouraged to find their voices, and are inspired to the benefits of living active, healthy lives.

    Wonderful Experience

    I just had to take a few moments to email and thank you for the wonderful experience my daughter had at camp. She attended the two-week camp from August 14th-28th and had an absolute blast! My daughter, Jill is a changed young lady. Her personality, confidence and entire outlook on life has taken a 180-degree turn. She has really been struggling with sports anxiety and has been seeing a sports psychologist for over a year but these two weeks have embedded a new sense of purpose in her. She was told about a mindfulness app from Brett and she has downloaded it and is using it daily. The environment you provide for these young women at Ak-O-Mak is truly astounding. The supports in place with the amazing staff, sports and cabin mates is truly a blessing. I cannot thank you enough for your amazing program. I feel like my daughter is more content with her body image and isn't constantly obsessing over her phone viewing Tik Tok's and Instagram. She already told me she wants to attend camp for three weeks next year:) She has taken her dad out on a few rides on her road bike and giving him tons of pointers:) ... Show More

    My Daughter has been home for almost two weeks now and I have been meaning to send this note. I wanted to send a sincere thank you to you and all of the staff that made this summer possible for my daughter and the other campers. My daughter went to camp this year a very different person than in years past because of the isolation from the pandemic.     Amazing Environment

    The environment you provide for these young women at Ak-O-Mak is truly astounding. The supports in place with the amazing staff, sports and cabin mates is truly a blessing.     I keep meaning to write to thank you and all of your staff so very much for giving my daughters the most wonderful camp experience. After a very tough year with the pandemic and keeping them rather isolated for online learning, we were just so happy for them to mingle, form great friendships and experience time away trying new sports and activities. They both loved Cheryl and she was obviously very kind to my daughter when she was homesick. It did a lot for her self confidence and my other daughter advertises your camp almost daily with all the attire that she bought and wears proudly.     At Camp Ak-O-Mak, empowering young girls has been our mission since 1928. We help campers build strength and confidence through an active, outdoor lifestyle—preparing them not only for athletic success but for life beyond camp. As Executive Director, I am proud of the dedicated team and supportive community that make Camp Ak-O-Mak a special place.
