What do kids learn in theatre arts camp?

Theatre arts training unleashes the power of children’s voices. Acting, singing, and dancing activities are combined in camp, exploring all aspects of children’s creative expression. Kids learn the basics of stage performance including stage directions, blocking, and projection, as well as advanced creative skills like improvisation and script writing.

While beginner theatre performers thrive in a collaborative environment, middle school campers are given more independence, where they can branch out into solos and monologues. Children learnt to master vocal projection, movement, and character development. Some kids are born for the stage, certainly, but theatre arts camp helps kids of all types to grow skills and presence.

Unique activities such as comedy training, role-playing, and sketch performance build children’s range as actors. Some theatre arts programs run for one or two weeks, while others run for the whole summer. Prices typically depend on the duration of camp, and some programs can be found for as low as $100, while more intensive and educational programs average around $300.

    About advanced theatre arts camps

In advanced theatre arts camps, children learn to think more critically of acting. Activities may include critiquing famous movies, musicals, and plays of the past ー age-appropriate, of course. This helps children recognize go deeper into what good acting, singing, and dancing looks like so they can apply it to their own performances.

Advanced theatre arts programs also hold showcases and recitals at the end of camp. This gives children a chance to show off their newfound talents to their friends and family. It also increases their confidence on stage and inspires them to continue with theatre arts. Camps give kids great public speaking skills as well, as children learn to project, enunciate, and engage audiences.

Why go to theatre arts camp?

Whether or not children pursue theatre professionally, theatre arts camps secure children with a useful set of life skills. Here’s what children can expect from camp:

    • Gain new performance abilities. Children act, sing, and dance in theatre arts camps, and they learn the beginner skills and techniques associated with each.
    • Children practice empathy. Empathy contributes to believable acting, as children learn how to understand and connect with their characters. Learn more about how all camps help kids' personal development.
    • Reading and memorization skills enhanced. Children read scripts and memorize lines in theatre arts camps. In fact, they adopt reading strategies and comprehension skills as a result. This helps children’s performance in school subjects such as English, as well as on written tests and exams.
    • Hands-on learning. Props and set pieces are often designed by campers themselves. Arts and crafts activities are likely included in rehearsal time.
    • Enhances listening skills. The dramatic and musical activities in theatre arts camps test children’s listening skills. Acting is reacting, meaning children must listen to fellow actors and respond accordingly. Children’s minds become sharper in theatre arts.
