The Our Kids review of French International Language Camps
Yes it sounds like a dream—learning French, nestled in the Alps—and for the students that attend, there are no doubt lots of pinch-me moments. That said, there’s more afoot here than glorious vistas and great food (though there are indeed both of those). Students come together with peers from around the world for the purpose of language learning, thought that’s just the tip of the iceberg. They learn about themselves, and their place in the world; they have a first-hand experience of what it means to be a global citizen within a truly global learning environment. What was unique about the program at French International Language Camps that made you want to enroll your child there?
I think the most unique thing about French International Language Camps is its bilingual nature. It’s relatively small, and they run it in a hotel in Megève.
My daughter was seven years old when she first went there. She spoke a little bit of French but mostly English, and she shared a room with a girl from Paris who only spoke French and another girl from Italy who only spoke English and Italian. The net result is that they all found a way to converse, and it really lifted their language skills.
I like the way the camp does teaching in the morning, teaching language in both directions, primarily English and French. But in the afternoons, they just get out and have fun, right? They do rafting, wakeboarding, and all the kinds of things you can do in the French Alps in summer, which is really cool.
What would you highlight about the camp’s programming, counselors, or facilities?
One of the highlights of French International Language Camps for me is actually the town, Megève. Megève in France is a ritzy ski resort town, but as people might know, the French Alps are far more fun in summertime than in wintertime. Wintertime is just skiing and snow, but in summertime, you can do everything.
My daughter said she was doing a summer luge, which is this sort of half-pipe all the way down the mountain. My wife was horrified to discover that she was sliding down the mountain on a luge. But everything was there, and so as a result, they could have an incredibly mixed bag of activities that, in most cases, kids have never done before and that here in New York you wouldn’t even think about doing.
Another example is hiking with mountain dogs, which are really twice the size of the kids, right? That’s just something you would never conceive of. So the unique aspects, I think, are the town and what the town then brings to the camp director’s ability to find new and unique things for the kids to actually do.
Pre-COVID, they had a pretty wide selection of nationalities. One of my son’s best friends from the camp is Saudi Arabian, lives in Riyadh, and still communicates with him. One of my daughter’s best friends is Russian, right? She didn’t have a word of English or French, and so they figured out how to converse in some version of Russian and English. So it tends to attract a pretty broad international audience.
How did you know that French International Language Camp was the right fit?
The camp director at the time, Tina Munnings, was incredibly warm and welcoming. The night before, my daughter didn’t say a word for an hour. But then we got there, and the friend from Paris turned up at the same time. They just got chatting and started talking a little bit in French. Then my daughter looked at me and said, “It’s okay, you can go now.” So we were good at that point.
The hotel they ran it in was a typical French Alps hotel, with wood panelling, a fireplace, and all that kind of stuff. As a parent, you’re leaving a seven-year-old girl and then flying to a different continent. But it was quite clear to me that they had this, and she was perfectly safe in their hands, so that was great.
Was there any change or noticeable personal growth that you saw in your children after time at French International Language Camps?
Both my kids started dreaming in French when they first did their camps in France. My son attended French International Language Camps a little bit later on and went there a few years in a row too. I’ve never actually seen that before, and that’s when you know they’ve become genuinely bilingual.
For my daughter in that first year, being forced to find a language with her two roommates, which was some combination of French and English, pushed her out of her comfort zone. When she went back the next year, she was pushed a little bit more, and so on and so forth.
Since then, she has done two or three Outward Bound courses. Her last one was two weeks sailing on an open boat in the North Atlantic with 10 other kids in the rain, wind, and everything else. She was the youngest in that group by a long way, but she had the confidence and the wherewithal to handle the conditions and actually help the other kids.
I bring that all the way back to that first experience with French International Language Camps and being pushed out of her comfort zone a little bit. It’s created a line of personal growth that you can see actually started with French International Language Camps in 2014.
How can parents overcome hesitancy to send their children away for a week or longer?
Megève is a lovely village and a lovely town. There’s zero crime, and everyone who lives and works there knows each other. It’s a very safe place to put your kids.
The camp itself is in a hotel, and everyone is being looked after all the time. The student-counselor ratio is very high on the counselor side.
Most kids need to overcome that fear earlier. We know some kids here in New York who’ve never been away from their siblings or parents for more than a night. Now they’re teenagers—my daughter is now 14, and my son is 16—and it shows. You can tell which kids haven’t been away from their parents.
I think it’s an important, critical part of growth for the kids themselves to overcome that fear earlier.
What would you tell other parents about the overall value of sending kids to French International Language Camps?
I’m very much in favour of sending kids to camps, particularly the ones that are smaller. I just like the fact that a smaller camp gives the kids a lot more scope to interact and be an individual, not just part of a large group.
I’m also very much in favour of education, particularly language education. If you place someone from Russia who speaks Russian into a group full of kids who only speak a different language, they’re going to figure it out relatively soon. They’ll communicate relatively soon, and how they do it is expanding a part of their brain they would otherwise never get to use if they stayed in their own country.
So I’m a big fan of these kinds of camps and a big fan of the language component as well.

How did you know French International Language Camp was the right fit?
I did my research online through Google and the website and felt it was very interesting. We just tried it out, and French International Language Camp was a great fit.
What’s unique about French International Language Camps?
French International Language Camp was in a beautiful location. The program looked good, so we tried it out the first year, and we were very happy.
The first year was an experiment, and the experiment turned out to be a very positive experience. So we went back again and again. We did three years, and my son would go back again this year, either as a camper or as a counselor.
Was there any personal growth you saw in your child?
Absolutely. His personality and his language both grew.
How can parents overcome hesitancy to send their children away overnight?
They need to feel that it is safe and establish trust in a professional organization like French International Language Camps.
What would you tell other parents about the overall value of sending kids here?
I think French International Language Camp is a great value. My family and I are extremely happy. We feel that it was so much fun and provided so much learning for our son. So overall, we found it very valuable.
What does your child say about their experience with French International Language Camps?
He loves it. He just loves it.
Any final thoughts on French International Language Camp?
I think the people who run the camp are very professional. They are very good. They’re very approachable. The counselors are accessible at any time via WhatsApp, text message, or phone call. And we never had any concerns.
They have calling hours in the evening, and the campers get their cell phones only for a short period of time. Sometimes, if my son doesn’t call me because they are late coming back and he misses the calling period, we can always call the counselors and talk to him or inquire about him.
I found the people who run French International Language Camp to be very professional. They take it seriously. I think they do a very good job.

I wanted to let you know that in particular we thought the camp counsellors this year were excellent. The team of young people made the activities fun and safe for everyone. You had a kind, sensible and fun group of counsellors this year. This was the main factor my children pointed to as the success.
The language lessons went better too. I was pleased to see the output of their work and the children felt the drama teaching was better.
My only slight concern is that I think my children like the food you provide too much as they seem to eat a lot! But this is not a criticism.

A Magical Experience Year After Year
As a mother, watching your child grow, thrive, and feel deeply connected to a place is an incredible gift. For the past three years, my son Ando has attended International Language Camp, and it has truly become his second home.
What started as a five-week sleepaway adventure when he was just six years old has turned into a cherished annual tradition—one we hope continues for many years to come.
From the very beginning, I was struck by how well cared for Ando was. The staff immediately made him feel safe, welcomed, and confident, which gave me such peace of mind. They’re not only kind and professional, but also remarkably flexible and attentive to the needs of each child and their families. They truly go above and beyond.
Ando has grown so much through this experience. He’s had the chance to do things that aren’t part of our everyday life in New York—like hiking in the Alps, joining in outdoor adventures, and immersing himself in French language and culture. But what’s been most meaningful is the international community he’s become part of. He’s made friends from all over the world, and every summer ends with tearful goodbyes and joyful anticipation for the next year.
Now, as he moves into the junior group, we’re feeling both the sadness of goodbye (for now) and the happiness of knowing we’ll be back. The memories, growth, and joy this camp has brought to Ando—and to me as his mom—are truly priceless.

For 30 years, International Language Camps has welcomed children and teenagers from around the world to Megève for summers filled with languages, adventure, friendship and discovery.
Since ILC was founded in 1996, our philosophy has remained simple: a summer camp should be a place where children feel safe and supported, but also where they are encouraged to grow, become more independent, try new experiences and open themselves to the world.
For Summer 2027, we welcome campers ages 6 to 17 through three programs designed specifically for each stage of childhood and adolescence: our FUN Program for ages 6–9, ADRENALINE Program for ages 10–13, and TEENS MOUNTAIN ADVENTURE for ages 14–17.
What matters deeply to me is that ILC remains a personal, human-sized camp. With around 40 campers per week, approximately one adult for every five campers, and language classes limited to eight students, our team has the opportunity to truly know each child. Every camper arrives with a different personality, level of confidence, language ability and experience of being away from home, and we take this into account throughout their stay.
Language learning is naturally an important part of ILC, but our ambition goes much further. We want children to use English or French to communicate, make friends and discover other cultures. We want them to experience the mountains, challenge themselves, work as a team and return home more confident and independent than when they arrived.
I also know how important the residential environment is when parents entrust us with their child, particularly when they are travelling from another country. Our campers stay at Hôtel Au Vieux Moulin, a high-quality hotel in the heart of Megève, where our ILC team is present day and night. This allows us to combine the excitement and independence of international camp life with comfort, attentive supervision and a reassuring environment.
Some of my favourite moments each summer are seeing children who were initially shy begin speaking another language with confidence, watching new friendships form between campers of different nationalities, and seeing young people become increasingly independent as the weeks progress.
At the end of their stay, I want every camper to leave Megève thinking: “I tried things I had never done before, I became more confident, I made friends from around the world, and I had an amazing summer.”

Our experienced international team is at the heart of the ILC experience. Language teachers are qualified professionals and native English or French speakers, while counsellors are carefully selected for their experience, maturity and ability to work with children and teenagers. Staff receive training adapted to ILC’s programs and safety procedures. Many team members return year after year, creating valuable continuity and a strong camp culture. following our ‘special’ experience with the camp this summer in Megeve we are very happy to announce that we are already preparing the next winter and summer camp. We learned a lot this summer and the camp was a great success, different from the other years and adapted fully to a covid sitution .We strictly respected all the measures that were imposed and the children enjoyed the mountains even more . Specially after a lockdown they were finally able to run and do activities freely outside. Mountains proved to be the best place to be in such a situation. Big spaces, outdoor activities, fresh air… all this and more made our campers very happy. We are very proud of what we have achieved this summer. We proved that it was possible to organize a camp in safe conditions. We also had quite a few ‘virtual’ campers and we are planning on organizing a virtual camp again next summer for those who might not be able to come.
We have introduced a new cancellation policy due to a covid. All the students enrolled will be fully reimbursed in case:
– we have to cancel the program
– you cannot leave your country or enter France due to covid governemental orders
– you cannot leave your home area in France due to covid governemental orders

At the heart of the French Alps, in the prestigious village of Megève, the children spend an unforgettable summer surrounded by the beautiful mountains. EXCELLENCE, SAFETY AND FUN!
What better way for them to engage in numerous sports and artistic activities than to be with young people from all over the world, to LIVE a foreign language? In the morning, they take language classes in small groups and by levels. The goal is to learn while playing, having fun and creating thanks to language, theater and civilization workshops. The afternoon is dedicated to different activities: golf, rafting, climbing, fishing, yoga or tree climbing. Once a week, the campers have the opportunity to explore the glacier Mer de Glace on the Mont Blanc or visit Annecy and its famous lake.
The excellence of the program, the great experience and the safety of every child have made International Language Camps famous. From the reception at the airport – at the families’ convenience – until the end of the stay, the camp team is available at all times for parents to keep them informed about the well being of their children.
An exciting and fun opportunity to learn not only a language but also to live with children from other countries and learn about their cultures.
In the morning, we have language workshops but forget about school! With small groups, every camper participates and gets involved! They have language lessons but also a theater workshop and a civilization workshop where they can practice the language in a fun way. On Saturdays it’s show time! The campers put on a show that they’ve been preparing all week and it’s amazing to see how much fun they can have speaking a language they weren’t confident in at the beginning of the week. We have about 50% of the children that come from all over the world to learn French but also 50% of French children who come to learn English. This is a unique opportunity for the children learning French to actually practice the language with native speakers their own age.
But it’s not all lessons and workshops. The afternoons are for fun, exciting activities. Being in the mountains and in the world-renowned village of Megève, there are so many activities to enjoy: rafting, climbing, swimming, hiking…. And these are just the obvious ones – every year we add new surprises.
On Sundays, we have a field trip to amazing places such as the glacier ‘Mer de Glace’ on the Mont Blanc mountain range or the wonderful Lake Annecy – the Venice of the Alps.
Our camps are so much fun and our dedicated multi-national team adds that extra touch. We like to keep things small and you can be assured that your child will be looked after as if in a big family. We are very proud of the excellence of our program and our staff.
Next year we will welcome campers from July 4th to August 7th, 2021.
We will propose 3 differents programs:
– the Fun program for 6 to 9 year olds
– the Adrenaline program for 10 to 13 year olds
– the Mont-Blanc program for 14 to 17 year olds
This year, camper can also choose options such as tennis, golf, Climbing and Dance lessons with a professional or Intensive language lessons in private lessons.
VIRTUAL FUN LANGUAGE CAMPS
While International Language Camps is well-known for its fun-filled Summer Camps, our team has worked tirelessly to move quickly and begin offering virtual programs. We are now ready to provide families with “Virtual Fun French and English Camps” of a high quality content for their children while they can’t join us this summer in Megève.
We are offering a variety of Virtual French Classes using our Webroom platform so that our families can receive high-quality French content from the comfort and safety of their own homes!
Our Virtual French Camps range from lighter academic- and fun-focused classes for youngsters to more rigorous academic programs for teens.
We also offer flexible 1-on-1 online tutoring as well for children or adults for many languages (French, English, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, Japanese and Chinese)
There are several classes available, organized in 3 levels: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced.
Our French and English virtual programs will be available from Monday to Friday, 2h30/ day during summer and in the week-end during the year.
We offer Fun and engaging programs to build verbal skills through a variety of fun activities for students aged 7 to 16.
From their room, your child will travel with us and visit France- LE TOUR DE FRANCE for French Classes- or the USA- THE GREYHOUND BUS USA TOUR for English classes.

11 questions to ask to evaluate the security of the camp
Parents often ask about the ratio of campers to counselors. While that’s a valid question, the maturity and experience of the staff is of utmost importance. Here are 11 important questions concerning safety at ILC and our answers.
What is the ratio of counselors to children?
The staff/child ratio is above the current requirement by the French government. We have one adult for six children maximum.
How do you select counselors?
All our counselors have been carefully selected in accordance with ILC criteria for skills and experience in working with children. Our team members are selected for their experience with children, for their age and their training. They are all bilingual.
All the service providers are qualified in their relevant activities (mountain guide, ski instructor…). Our dedicated and enthusiastic team of staff is 100% focused on the safety of the participants and the smooth running of the activities programs. Our staff are typically aged 18 to 28, and are fun, outdoors loving people from all over the world. All activity staff must be able to provide us with a copy of a police statement from their country of origin showing a clean record.
Is there medical personnel on the staff?
Our camps have a nurse and we have a doctor just near the camp.
What would happen in the event of an emergency?
In the event of illness or accident, we are only minutes away from our doctor. We have a hospital in Sallanches only 15 minutes away or just 5 minutes by helicopter.
Do your counselors carry mobile phones in case of emergency?
All our counselors carry a mobile phone at all times that allows them to react very quickly in case of emergency.
Is the health insurance and accidents coverage included?
Our company, our team and the participants are covered in case of: accident, civil responsibility, defense and assistance.
Personal effects of minors are not covered (send clothing which is not expensive and not easily soiled).
Repatriation of minors is not covered. We recommend you take out repatriation insurance.
How do you deal with weather conditions?
Sports and activities are practiced only in suitable conditions and we are well informed of any weather condition changes. If necessary we modify the day’s program according to the weather conditions.
How are the kids supervised?
Security is an essential part of our camps: the children are supervised 24 hours a day. There’s always a counselor with them.
