Overnight summer camps in Canada for 2026/2027

Life at an overnight camp

At night, when it's time to retire to their cabins or tents, campers can bond and get to know each other in a way that they might not be able to do in a day-only setting.

That's one of the main benefits of an overnight camp, if you ask Dianne Young, executive director of Camp Ak-O-Mak, an all-girls residential camp in Ahmic Harbour. And it's that overnight experience - spending time away from home, often for weeks—that truly defines a residential or overnight camp.

"Residential camp gives you that sense of community," Young adds. "It teaches the children how to live with others and to share... and it creates a family-type atmosphere."

Not only does it help them learn how to share, but the opportunity to get away from their family and to be around others their age can also help kids learn how to be independent and self-reliant, says Aruna Ogale, executive director of the Ontario Camps Association. "[Overnight camp] allows children to really practice independence, but at the same time knowing that there are boundaries," she says. "And they can forge friendships outside of the regular social milieu that they find in their neighbourhood or their school system."

And those overnight camp friendships are unlike anything else, if you ask Andy Cabral, co-director of Pleasant Bay Camp, a Christian not-for-profit overnight camp located outside Trenton. "I think kids let down those defences a little bit when it's a homogenous group in the cabin at night. They"re able to speak their minds," he says. "I think you bond with the people you're with in a different way when you’re staying over."

But how do you know when your kids are ready to take on an overnight camp? According to Ogale, there is no magic age - it will vary from kid to kid, she says, and will depend on their level of independence to start. "If you've never, ever sent your kid to a sleepover, then they might not be (ready)," she says. "Think about how they do in different situations, and then go from there."

Twelve-year-old Taylore Salwonchuk, for one, started as a camper at Pleasant Bay when she was eight. Now she comes for two separate weeks every summer. She loves the friendships she's made, she says, but also just likes getting away from her home in Whitby for an extended period of time, to do things that she isn't able to do there.

"It's really nice because you get away from the city and you get a lot of activities and you have a lot of fun," Taylore says. "You enjoy the outdoors."

FAQ about overnight summer camps

When should I register for overnight summer camps?

Many overnight summer camps open registration in the fall or early winter for the following year. Popular camps can fill by late winter or early spring, especially for prime July sessions. Registering early increases your chances of securing preferred dates and cabin placements.

What does a typical day look like at an overnight summer camp?

Most overnight summer camps follow a structured daily schedule that includes morning instructional activities, afternoon recreation or outdoor adventures, evening group events, and cabin time. Summer programs often balance skill-building with free swim, campfires, and special theme nights.

How do overnight summer camps handle hot weather and outdoor safety?

Summer camps build hydration breaks, shaded rest periods, and swim times into their schedules. Staff monitor heat conditions, encourage sunscreen use, and adjust activity intensity when necessary to keep campers safe and comfortable.

What should my child pack for an overnight summer camp?

Most camps provide detailed packing lists that include clothing for warm weather, swimwear, closed-toe shoes, rain gear, toiletries, bedding, and any required equipment for specialty programs. Labeling belongings clearly helps prevent lost items.

Do overnight summer camps allow communication with parents?

Policies vary. Many camps allow scheduled phone calls or provide secure online photo updates. Some camps limit device use to help campers fully engage in the summer experience. Review each camp’s communication policy before registering.

Are overnight summer camps focused only on outdoor activities?

While outdoor experiences are central to many summer programs, overnight summer camps may also include arts, leadership development, STEM programming, athletics, and specialty instruction. The mix of activities depends on the camp’s focus.
