Benefits of cooking camps

Here’s a look at what kids learn in cooking camps and other benefits they accrue.

Cooking skills. Camps are targeted at kids 8 and older, up through the teen years. Camps run by professional chefs or cooking schools offer professional training in a safe setting. Daily schedules may revolve around different kinds of meals, various desserts, or cuisine by country. Camps may have cooking competitions that help kids understand their skills in context. Kids gain confidence in the kitchen.

Skills that carry over to other practices. Kids learn some basics of project management, following instructions, learning procedures, safety, and more. There’s chemistry involved in cooking, as well as nutritional science.

How much experience do leaders have in both cooking and in teaching camp? Find out about any examples of discipline issues. Ask them how they tailor the camp curriculum to kids in the age group targeted.
What’s the goal or projected outcome of the camp session? How many recipes will kids learn in the camp? What is the expected takeaway from the camp session?
What is the ratio of teachers to kids? Consider how this will impact safety, the kids’ ability to learn, and the overall discipline of the camp.
What is the policy with regard to diets and allergies? Ask if the camp teaches about different diets, for one thing. But also, know what their policy is with regard to snacks, food allergies, and any special dietary needs your child may have.
Is financial aid available? Find out about any financial relief such as sibling discounts.
