There’s a good variety of camps in Woodstock to choose from. Traditional camps might be the norm, but STEM summer camps are increasingly popular as are nature studies camps. While day camps are top-of-mind for parents, we always encourage families to consider the personal growth experiences available only in overnight camps. On our sister site, we explore fully how overnight summer camps help kids’ personal growth, encouraging independence and responsibility.
A typical weekly summer camp in Woodstock starts out at about $220 per week. As a rule, the more specialized a camp is the higher the fees might be. Camps with more facilities and higher operating costs will offer kids more, of course, but they’ll also cost more, in the range of $350 and up.
When it comes to finding the right camp, we think there are five key areas of concern. Those are below, with follow-up or related questions added:
What are your qualifications?
How long has the camp been running? What experience do you have with the subject of the camp (in the case of technology or education camps)? What are the qualifications of leaders and counsellors in terms of safety training or dealing with discipline?
What policies ensure camper safety?
Do parents sign a waiver? How does the camp deal with bullying? Are counsellors are police-checked?
Who is responsible for my child?
How are they qualified? Can I contact my child’s counsellor or leader directly? Are counsellors trained under the ASAP Camp Safety Program?
What is the activity schedule?
How does this match my child’s interests and needs? How much time is spent on each activity?
What do you do to make new kids comfortable?
Is there an orientation? Are counsellors skilled in drawing out shy kids?
There’s a lot more detail on these and more questions in Our Kids’ ebook, 14 questions to ask camps.
