There are many different types of swimming classes and lessons offered in camps, schools, and community centres across the country. These lessons are for kids of different levels and ages. They’re offered in both the summer and winter, and during spring and winter break.
Some swimming lessons are offered for beginning or early swimmers. For instance, there are parent and tot classes. These are classes you will take with your young child, who will likely be between 6 months and 3 years of age.
In a parent and tot class, which is usually a group lesson, you and the instructor will help your child get comfortable in the water. You’ll go into the water together, and sing songs, play games, and have fun. Your child will learn to kick, put their face in the water, and enter the water (likely with you).
There are also lower-level swimming classes for older kids, who are usually between the ages of 4 and 8. In these classes, your child will start will enter and leave the water by themselves. They’ll also start to learn some of the swimming strokes. And, depending on their age and skill level, they may begin treading water and swimming by themselves.
Some swimming lessons are for more advanced swimmers. These are sometimes offered for kids who are 10 or older. Your child’s eligibility will really depend on their skill level, though.
In these swimming lessons, your child will continue to work on the breaststroke, front crawl, and other swimming strokes. They also may work on diving and other advanced skills. Some of these classes also involve competitive swimming programs. In these programs, your child may have the opportunity to race against other kids and take part in diving competitions across the country.
Find swimming classes and lessons above. These include programs in Toronto, Montreal, and Victoria.
