    What happens in piano lessons?

Piano lessons immerse children in the excitement of musical training. Although there is an emphasis on classical music, children also experiment with jazz, blues, and pop genres. An education in basic music theory and history is provided for beginner pianists, as children develop rhythm, sight reading, and improvisation skills. Private or group instruction is available in these programs. While private lessons are more personalized, group lessons improve children’s social and collaboration skills. Classes are available in both virtual and in-person formats.

While piano programs specialise in keyboard training, other activities, such as singing and arts and crafts, are integrated into the curriculum. Children explore multiple avenues of musicality in these programs. Some piano activities are embedded in other program curriculums that focus on general music training, songwriting, and tutoring

Some programs listed above run from January to December, while others are semester-based programs. Yearly programs are payable per lesson, and start at $30. Semester programs or camps are typically more costly, running between $300 and $500. In all programs, boys and girls as young as 4 years old are welcome in class. Beginner pupils focus on music theory training, while playing songs with a slower tempo and basic notes. Advanced musicians play longer and more complex pieces.

Check individual programs listed above to learn what they teach.

    About advanced piano programs

Advanced piano programs challenge students’ professional musical skills. Individual and ensemble performances are conducted during these programs, diversifying kids’ performance skills. Advanced programs typically include examinations directed by the RCM (Royal Conservatory of Music) curriculum. Examinations confirm whether children are prepared to graduate to the next stages of their piano training.

The curriculum for these programs transitions between beginner and advanced skill, improving children’s music appreciation, improvisation, and confidence. Families are provided trial lessons in advanced programs. Children have the opportunity to assess whether they enjoy playing the piano before committing to the instrument.

    Why enroll in piano programs?

Piano classes and camps nurture children from beginner to advanced stages in their musical career. Here are some of the reasons one might choose piano lessons for their child:

    • Experienced instructors lead children through various exercises and songs that challenge children’s creativity. Instructors provide individualized feedback and support.
    • Self-discipline kids learn helps them reach their full potential in piano lessons. Regularly scheduled practice develops their skills as musicians. This also translates to other areas of their lives including academics and later career development.
    • Children’s mental health improves whilst playing piano. Endorphins ー “happy hormones” ー are known to release as music is played or sung, which overpower stress or anxiety hormones.
    • Piano has other benefits for students’ academic life as well. Activities such as sight reading, counting, and playing scales teach students about fractions, patterns, and organization. These skills can be transferred to school subjects such as math or English. Memorization skills are heightened in class as well.
