The Our Kids review of Merriam School of Music Summer Camps

    our take

Merriam School of Music manifests Alan Merriam’s lifelong vision to reinvest music lessons with fun. Kids should enthusiastically crave to learn, he believes, and when they love performing as much as he did, his dream is fulfilled. Since 1998, he and others have developed this into North America’s largest single-purpose music school, teaching over three million music lessons. Kids brand new to music or already skilled in performance, aged four to 17, find lessons and camps that balance skill development with joy and camaraderie. Themed camps include K-Pop to Music Production. Other camps focus on guitar, ukulele, percussion, piano, and violin, as well as choir and songwriting. Campers spend the day singing, dancing, playing, and creating… and losing themselves in the groove. Both parents and kids are effusive about and grateful for the experience they have here.

    They love it!

My kids have been part of the Merriam Music community since Sept 2015. They have taken piano group lessons, piano private lessons and summer camps (violin, percussion, etc). They love it! The teachers are all fantastic with the kids. My eldest is currently taking private piano classes with Mr Collin. Mr Collin keeps the class fun and on track. My daughter is able to complete all the necessary certification AND work on music that she likes. She always looks forward to piano class ... Show More

    Seen Incredible Progress

We've been at Merriam for just over 3 years and have seen incredible progress with our daughter in Ms Mango's class. My daughter had no piano experience and neither did me or her dad. Now she is composing short pieces and regularly picking up more advanced pieces. The group learning format is engaging and Ms Mango is patient, committed and believes in all her students. She has a passion for music education and has an inclusive teaching style. She really takes extra time to help students overcome their challenges. Thank you Ms Mango! We've also benefitted from the summer camps and regularly get to see my daughter perform at recitals with excellent production quality. Like most skills, practice outside the classroom is so important and I've regularly checked in with Ms Mango on strategies to support my daughter at home ... Show More

    Summer camp program is outstanding

We have a great experience at Merriam School of Music. Both Ms. Divine and Ms. Alana are amazing teachers for my son. Their classes are well prepared, very interactive and fun for the students. We also enjoyed the organized recital that highlighted the students' performances and hard work. Their summer camp program is also outstanding, offering a perfect blend of learning and fun activities that keeps the kids excited and motivated throughout the week ... Show More

    Every program exceeded our expectations

I have had children attending Merriam since 2006. In that time, we have had the pleasure of experiencing several different Merriam programs including private piano, private guitar, preschool music, group piano and camps. Every program exceeded our expectations. We have had many teachers between our 3 kids over the course of our time here, and every one of them has been awesome. It is incredible to watch how they can take anyone of any age or skill level and make a musician of them, all while having an amazing time. My youngest child started in the preschool program just before she turned 3. She moved on to group piano when she turned 4. She is now 9 and I can honestly say she has enjoyed every single class in that 7 years. This is all credit to the incredible program Merriam has and the energy and professionalism the teachers bring to the class every day. My daughter will be completing the group piano program in June. She will move on to another Merriam program in the fall and I know it will be just as amazing. Thank you to Krista Richards, Hadley Bernard and the entire Merriam School staff ... Show More

    Wonderful place to learn music

Merriam school of music is a wonderful place to learn music. Both of our children have been taking group lessons for a few years and they have enjoyed the program immensely. The kids have benefitted from Ms Alana, who is a dedicated and very effective teacher. Unlike many other places, the school ensures children are geared for success and develop a love of music for life. They provide students with numerous opportunities like their monthly recitals and Groupfest to further develop their skills and confidence. The classes are structured to keep students engaged using a variety of fun activities to encompass all music components. By the way, the school also runs an awesome summer camp program! ... Perfect way to have fun at learning

My daughter has been taking lessons from here for the past 4 years now. The Piano Group lessons setting is a perfect way for them to have fun at learning. Michelle Dizon is the instructor that my daughter has and she is such a great instructor. She's patient and always can pick up what each individual student needs to work on when they are playing a piece. The students not only learn the technique of how to play a piano, but also learns the music theory. We even had my daughter enrolled for summer camps here, where she even learned how to play the Ukulele. I, myself, have been taking private guitar lessons here for almost 2 years now ... Show More

"One-stop shop" for the pursuit of musical education

Great school and piano store. We bought our 1st digital piano here and then traded it in a few years later for an upright. The process was smooth, and we received a good trade-in value. They teach drums and vocals in addition to the various instruments. Piano is probably their most popular. Students can sign up for monthly recitals, where you play on stage, your taught instrument, or even sing, in front of friends, family, and the families of the other participants. Good for building confidence. There are also competitive events to win scholarships and prizes and events where an adjucator listens to your playing performance and gives expert comments on your musical progress. There is a private plan available, working 1 on 1 with a music teacher. Scheduling is flexible with classes available on Saturdays. There are also make-up days if you missed a class or if the class was canceled. You may enroll in their annual examination that covers all the music theory and lessons leaned throughout the school year. Passing this exam puts you into the next level if you wish to continue your music education with Merriam. There are music camps and other events that are available throughout the year. Overall, Merriam School of Music is your "one-stop shop" for the pursuit of musical education. Highly recommended ... Show More

Would not hesitate to recommend this school

Ryan has been taking private voice lessons at Merriam for 5 years. The last 2 years he has been enrolled in their Enriched Voice Program. Our experience at Merriam has been nothing less than wonderful. He has had the same teacher since he started and she is absolutely amazing. We love the way that the lessons follow the school year. There are make up opportunities for missed lessons due to illness or vacation. The Enriched Program has allowed Ryan to improve at a rate much faster than just ordinary lessons would allow. There are many opportunities for the kids to perform on stage to gain that experience. The Musical Theatre program that runs throughout the year is also an incredible program which we found worthwhile. In addition, Ryan has taken part in the two week Musical Theatre summer program that results in an amazing production at the end of the two weeks. I would not hesitate to recommend this school to anyone interested in any form of music ... Show More

    Merriam is the benchmark

When it comes to learning music your search stops here. I think the Meriam is the benchmark that you need to compare others. We did some research more than 5 years ago and no one comes close to MSoM. Both our kids have been taking lessons with MSoM for more than 4 years and my son volunteers for the Summer Camps at MSoM. The teachers for Piano and guitar are excellent and really take their time to teach ... Show More

    Dedicated to nurturing all musicians

As a parent, I couldn't be more grateful for the incredible experience my child (HT) has had at Merriam School of Music. The environment here is warm, welcoming, and truly dedicated to nurturing young (and All) musicians. Our current teacher, Ms Alana Merriam, is exceptional. She has a unique ability to connect with students, making each lesson both fun and educational. My child has not only improved technically but has also developed a genuine love for music. The progress we've seen is remarkable, and it's all thanks to Ms Alana Merriam's patience, expertise, and passion for teaching. We’ve had many great teachers here, especially another music teacher to mention is Ms Christa. The school's facilities are top-notch, and the entire staff is friendly and supportive. They go above and beyond to create a positive learning atmosphere. Summer Camps are great here too, my daughter has learned guitar+++ I highly recommend Merriam School of Music to any parent looking to inspire their child’s musical journey. Thank you, Merriam School of Music and Ms Alana Merriam, for making music a joyful part of our lives ... Show More

    Director's Message

Welcome to the 2026 summer season at the Merriam School of Music! As the Camp Director and a veteran member of the Merriam faculty for over a decade, it is my absolute joy to invite your family into our musical community. Having seen over 15,000 children pass through our camp programs since its inception, I have witnessed firsthand the extraordinary power of music to ignite a child’s confidence, creativity, and sense of belonging. At Merriam, we believe that music is a language that every child can learn to speak fluently. Our summer camps are designed to be the ultimate "on-ramp" for this journey. Whether your child is four years old and discovering the joy of rhythm in our Mini Music sessions, or a teenager exploring digital production in our professional recording studios, our goal is to make every moment fun, social, and deeply engaging. As a "musician-mom" myself, I understand that the best learning happens when a child feels safe, included, and properly challenged. This is why we prioritize tight age and level clustering, ensuring that every camper finds their perfect "tribe" of new friends. This year, we are thrilled to offer an incredible lineup of themed weeks that bring modern culture into the classroom. From the high-energy choreography of our K-Pop weeks and the innovative sound design of our Gamer Quest adventures to the timeless magic of our Broadway and Disney-themed sessions, there is something to capture the imagination of every young artist. Our university-educated instructors—who are among the top 5% of applicants we interview—are dedicated to helping each child find their unique voice. We know that summer is a busy time for families, which is why we run our programs "like clockwork." With convenient locations in Oakville and Vaughan, and flexible extended care options from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM, we strive to make your summer as stress-free as it is musical. I invite you to explore our full range of programs—from beginner instrument intensives to our legendary Rock Band camps—at our dedicated camp portal: members.merriammusic.com/music-camps/. We cannot wait to help your child unleash the power of music this summer. We'll see you at camp!

    Staff and Counsellors

All our camp counsellors are current teachers and high-level students at our music school, with years of both camp and teaching experience. Our camp is lead by Michelle Dizon, with over 10 years of experience, and represents a mix of both female and male instructors who have all received extensive training in class management. Safety is always paramount, and all counsellors have received vulnerable-sector police checks and health-and-safety training.
