What do children learn at piano camps?

Kids and teens extend their musical literacy at piano camps. Beginner piano players learn basic music theory, such as the notes on a scale, various musical notation (clefs, breaks, dynamics, etc.), and finger placements. Intermediate players practice more complex skills like sight reading and composing original music. By intermediate levels, kids and teens will have mastered reading music pieces and understanding music theory.

Note that this description is generalized. Consult camps listed above for specific details of their curriculum and activities

Elements of music history are integrated into most piano camps’ curriculum. You might learn about famous composers, musicians, and musical eras of the past to analyze its influence on modern music. Genres such as pop, rock, jazz, and classical music are practiced at all camps.

At advanced piano camps, kids and teens learn how to play more complex pieces. They may also learn how to play in a musical ensemble, where they learn to harmonize with fellow musicians. This skill requires heightened listening skills, and campers learn how to match harmonies to a specific melody. They learn to be part of a band. Campers receive individualized feedback.

Virtual classes are offered as well for a more convenient and accessible option. Most camps offer special needs support for children with learning, motor, or physical disabilities. In fact, some specialize in using music as a form of therapy for these campers. Prices for piano camps and programs begin at $38 per week, while some are over $500 for the entire semester.

Why go to piano camp?

In addition to learning piano, there are other benefits kids gain from piano camp.

  • Improved memory. In piano camp, kids and teens memorize scales, notes, finger positions, and more. Campers improve their memorization skills and retention.
  • Mental health benefits. Playing music is therapeutic. Playing the piano or listening to music, both done in piano camp, improves children’s moods. Improving their piano playing helps campers develop this into at least a soothing pastime – or more, of course.
  • Enforces self-discipline. In camp, kids and teens are expected to practice the piano daily or weekly. Campers must integrate piano into their daily routines and be self-disciplined.
  • Individualized attention. Whether children train privately or in a group, they receive individual, direct feedback from teachers that helps them accept constructive criticism and grow personally.
  • Improved listening skills. Kids and teens learn to recognize notes, scales, and musical notation in camp. They progressively train their ears to listen for the slightest musical details in songs.
