What does your child learn in photography classes?

Aspiring photojournalists, influencers, filmmakers, and graphic designers will enjoy training in these classes. Classes teach kids and teens how to use a digital camera, and how to use various functions like shutter speed, ISO, aperture, and parts of the lens. Kids and teens also experiment with composition, learning how framing, colour, and editing contribute to an image’s aesthetic.

A major component of photography classes is the editing process. Students learn how to upload RAW and .jpg images before editing them in Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. In some classes, Canva, a graphic designing software, is used to further challenge children’s compositional skills.

Classes encourage students to experiment with various types of photography including portrait, nature, editorial, or product photography. Professional lighting, camera, and editing equipment is used in classes, though most will require students to provide their own SD card or laptop.

At advanced photography classes, students work hands-on to go deeper into the photographic process and discover more about who they are as a photographer. They work with professional level equipment, like Canon, Nikon, or Sony cameras, and learn to work with lighting equipment commonly used in professional studios. This ensures that students understand the mechanics of professional photography so that they can pursue it in the future.

Classes are available for children ages 7 and up. Some courses are listed as credit courses, in which high school students ages 15 to 18 can receive an extra credit outside of school. These are essential for students wishing to pursue a photography program in postsecondary school. Prices start at $200.

Why go to photography classes?

Kids and teens acquire new life and artistic skills in photography classes. Here’s a look at a few benefits your child might find at their class:

  • Learn about responsibility. With their very own cameras, lighting equipment, and more at their disposal, kids and teens learn to be responsible for their items. During class time, your child learns how to care for their equipment and take ownership of their actions.
  • A new, accessible hobby. Smartphones and tablets make it much simpler to take photos anywhere. Away from class, kids and teens can continue applying what they learn by using more accessible technology. They’ll grow followers on Instagram or VSCO to receive feedback and develop interest in their work.
  • Find your creative style. Photography is a unique way to identify what your creative process and artistic style is. With the use of props, lighting, colour, and composition, kids and teens recognize what art they’re drawn to create. With this knowledge, kids and teens can progress to other visual arts styles with ease.
  • Portfolio building. At the end of most photography classes, students compile a portfolio of all their work. This collection of images depicts their growth as photographers and can later be used to apply for photography jobs and schools.
