What does your child learn in photography classes?
Aspiring photojournalists, influencers, filmmakers, and graphic designers will enjoy training in these classes. Classes teach kids and teens how to use a digital camera, and how to use various functions like shutter speed, ISO, aperture, and parts of the lens. Kids and teens also experiment with composition, learning how framing, colour, and editing contribute to an image’s aesthetic.
A major component of photography classes is the editing process. Students learn how to upload RAW and .jpg images before editing them in Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. In some classes, Canva, a graphic designing software, is used to further challenge children’s compositional skills.
Classes encourage students to experiment with various types of photography including portrait, nature, editorial, or product photography. Professional lighting, camera, and editing equipment is used in classes, though most will require students to provide their own SD card or laptop.
At advanced photography classes, students work hands-on to go deeper into the photographic process and discover more about who they are as a photographer. They work with professional level equipment, like Canon, Nikon, or Sony cameras, and learn to work with lighting equipment commonly used in professional studios. This ensures that students understand the mechanics of professional photography so that they can pursue it in the future.
Classes are available for children ages 7 and up. Some courses are listed as credit courses, in which high school students ages 15 to 18 can receive an extra credit outside of school. These are essential for students wishing to pursue a photography program in postsecondary school. Prices start at $200.
