Photography camps immerse children in the entire creative photography process. From planning to shooting to editing, children learn about tools and techniques of the professional photography industry. Digital photography is most prominent, and children learn all functions of a traditional DSLR. Traditional SLR photography is also taught, of course. Functions they learn about include aperture, shutter speed, focus, zoom, and ISO adjustment. Children also learn about differences between shooting in RAW or jpg formats. More accessible photography camps are available as well, where children can shoot images on their smartphones or tablets.
During the editing process, kids typically work on Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom and learn all basic functions and tools within either software. Kids use lights, cameras, and tripods that can be found in professional studios to shoot their pictures. However, campers will likely be expected to bring their own SD card to camp.
Basic visual art skills like lighting and composition play large roles in photography. Children learn how to light outdoor, indoor, or portrait photos, as well as how to frame images using common composition techniques such as the Rule of Thirds. Prices for photography camps start at $100, and some exceed $1,000 for the semester. Graphic design and filmmaking activities are integrated into most programs.
Hands-on learning is a sign of an advanced photography camp. Kids properly learn all functions of the camera, lights, and editing softwares through deepened experience. Inspiration is drawn from everywhere. Campers analyze famous photographs and photographers of the past to inspire their current content, go out into nature, or research online.
These camps also help teens create photography portfolios. In these, children showcase all work they have created. This may include portrait, editorial, or product photography, as well as short films or videos. Portfolios create a foundation for kids’ pursuit of a photography career. Jobs in graphic design, cinematography, journalism, and social media are all possible for kids with an exceptional eye, developed at photography camp.
Photography camp gives children a new set of life and artistic skills. Here are some more things children will gain from time at camp:
