What kids learn in guitar lessons

Aspiring guitarists receive intensive hands-on instruction in guitar lessons. Instructors lead children through songs in various genres including blues, jazz, and rock guitar. Class curriculum combines music theory with specific guitar techniques. Music theory includes knowledge of rhythm, chords, and music notes. Specific guitar techniques include knowledge of finger placements and strumming patterns.

Families have the option to enroll in private or group guitar lessons. As you research, consider whether your son or daughter excels better in individual or collaborative settings. Ensemble classes are organized based on skill level, allowing children to mingle and perform with others who have a similar level of experience.

Some programs include guitar instruction among other activities like general music lessons, vocal training, and band camps. Tutoring in music theory or history is also provided. In all guitar programs, boys and girls aged 6 and up are welcomed. Each child’s education is tailored to their age and skill level, as instructors assess children’s strengths and weaknesses before assigning them songs and exercises. Prices start at $29 per lesson (as of 2022), and lessons typically run from January to December.

Consult with individual programs listed above to learn specifics of their curriculum.

    About advanced guitar lessons

In advanced guitar lessons, individual strengths and weaknesses are assessed, and kids are challenged to improve and grow. Classes are led by instructors with years of experience in teaching and playing guitar. Kids attain a deeper understanding through experiential learning, as they spend more time playing their instruments. Strumming patterns, chords, finger placements, and more are all memorized in these classes.

These lessons also experiment between genres like pop, rock, or blues. Classes teach a variety of guitar types including classical and electric. Some classes provide rental guitars for children to become comfortable with, although families typically purchase a personal guitar for children.

    Why enroll in guitar lessons?

The structure and curriculum of guitar lessons benefit children’s personal growth and development. Here are some of the ways these lessons help your child excel:

    • Self-expression is enhanced. For example, the skills learned in class will often inspire children to compose and perform their own songs.
    • Lessons offer a low-pressure environment where children can learn for fun or for professional pursuits. That said, instructors expect children to be disciplined and dedicated to their instrument.
    • Children’s memory improves through guitar practice as well as memorizing notes, chords, and patterns. This improves memorization and other study skills needed for kids' math, history, science, or drama, etc.
    • It is easy to make friends in group lessons by collaborating and communicating with a diverse group of fellow music lovers.

In your research, you’ll notice that online and in-person lessons are available to students. If it’s more convenient, certain guitar programs provide the same education in virtual formats. Children play without distractions from the comfort of their own home. Virtual lessons also invite families to participate in class to encourage students. In both online and in-person lessons, children improve their musicality!
