What do children learn in STEM classes?

STEM classes are academically stimulating extracurriculars that expand children’s learning in math, science, engineering, and technology. While these topics are explored directly in class, niche topics are also introduced, including everything from game design to medical science, and robotics to programming. As kids create physical and virtual-based projects, they gain valuable life skills like collaboration, independent learning, and project management.

STEM classes let kids see how these disciplines impact their daily lives. For example, a class may teach kids to code and engineer small machines like flashlights and calculators. In this, kids recognize how common machines apply engineering, math, and science, as well as technology. The experiential learning format of classes in STEM lets students work with and develop skills in these various disciplines.

While STEM classes are mostly after-school programs, there are also tutoring sessions led by certified educators. Here, kids receive direct attention and feedback from instructors. Though some STEM classes are entirely free, most range from $100 or $200. Despite some programs for girls, most kids STEM programs are coeducational.

Advanced STEM programs

Kids unlock future career and academic opportunities in more advanced STEM programs. These programs are often led by university professors or experts in the field who mentor teens as they develop complex projects in fields like robotics, Python programming, and other areas. Some advanced STEM programs are conducted through top universities such as Queen’s or York, etc. Kids create postsecondary-level projects in these upper level STEM classes.

Why enroll in a STEM program?

STEM programs satisfy children’s natural curiosity and encourage them to explore the scientific and technological world. Some other things children can expect from these classes include:

  • Ignite a passion for learning. Experiential learning, gameplay, and collaboration make learning more exciting for children. Children will approach school and other academic activities with more enthusiasm than ever.
  • Gain hard skills. 21st century job applicants with a concrete set of hard skills have a big advantage in the marketplace. STEM program graduates are well one their way to gaining management skills, strategy development skills, and advanced computer literacy.
  • Development of both independence and collaboration. Children are provided a balance between independent and collaborative work in programs. They work with others to construct projects while problem-solving and completing small tasks on their own. Learn more about how camps and programs develop independence and social skills.
  • Unique career trajectories. Although science, technology, engineering, and math careers are in sight for graduates of these programs, more unique jobs in architecture, urban planning, or meteorology are also possible.
  • STEAM camps and classes encourage students to go one step further, integrating the arts. Kids can seamlessly transition to these programs with their STEM training.
