Here's what makes UBC Geering Up stand out
UBC Geering Up Engineering Outreach is an award-winning team within the UBC Faculty of Applied Science with the mandate of promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) to youth across British Columbia. Geering Up offers a wide variety of barrier-breaking K-12 programs including summer camps, after-school and weekend clubs, weekend events, in-school workshops, teacher professional development, community outreach, and more! Summer camps run in 6 locations: UBC Vancouver, UBC Okanagan, South Surrey, Richmond, Port Coquitlam, and North Vancouver. Geering Up is a proud member of the Actua network.

Programs and Sessions Calendar

We focus on all things STEAM! Geering Up is an outreach program with the goal of helping every youth see themselves with a future in STEAM. To do this, our programs are beginner-friendly and hands-on. We focus on building teamwork, problem-solving, and creative thinking skills. No tests, no pressure - just STEAM fun! Geering Up is NOT an academy and does not offer for-credit programs. Our curriculum is a complement to classroom learning, but our programs are very much still a summer camp. We firmly believe that the first step to creating a strong STEM identity is creating spaces where everyone feels welcome, respected, and has fun.

Registration Details

Registration is open to everyone and can be found on our website. We launch our summer camp registration late February each year. Full payment is required to register. Geering Up operates as a non-profit organization and incurs substantial fees for each cancellation. Our cancellation policy can be found on our website https://geeringup.apsc.ubc.ca/camps/in-person-camps/faq/ Third-party groups: Geering Up programming is designed and intended for individual participants, not groups. Having a group (local or visiting) register for our programming greatly impacts the quality of the individual participant's experience; something that is extremely important to us. As such, group registrations are prohibited.

The Our Kids review of UBC Geering Up

These highly respected STEM learning experiences for youth blend hands-on experimentation with the curiosity-driven spirit of university research. Held at the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Applied Science, camps introduce students to engineering and science in engaging, age-appropriate programs that build both technical skills and creative thinking. Maker Camps are a highlight, in which elementary-aged students spend the week designing, building, and testing projects. Kids engage in playful experimentation, getting a feel for the way engineers approach problem-solving as they work with tools, materials, and prototypes. Miniminds Camps are targeted at kids just entering elementary school. It’s an early step into STEM learning with fun added into the mix, while they gain classroom and social skills. STEAM Creators broadens the experience by integrating art and design. Parents praise camps’ engaging, enthusiastic instructors and marvel at how kids have so much fun and get excited about learning.

Meet the Staff

Staff and Counsellors

Our staff are passionate undergraduate and senior high school students. Each program has a minimum of two instructors, with high school student volunteers assisting. Each summer, our staff participate in 2.5 weeks of training with topics including classroom management, emergency preparedness, first aid, EDI.I (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Indigeneity), teaching skills, and more. We put a lot of time and care into making sure our staff are prepared to lead camps. Geering Up staff are certified in first aid and CPR. All Geering Up staff and volunteers are required to have a Criminal Record Check for vulnerable sectors on file.
