What do children learn in writing classes?

Kids and teens from Kindergarten to Grade 12 are welcomed in after-school writing programs. Classes teach kids fundamental creative and academic writing skills. Creative writing programs teach kids and teens to write through various forms such as short stories, poetry, and personal essays. Campers are encouraged to write original stories and learn how to create characters. Literary analysis is part of these programs, where students learn how to dissect a narrative’s themes, symbolism, and more. Literary devices are identified here, and children learn about techniques such as foreshadowing, allegory, and imagery.

This description is generalized. Consult camps above for specific details of their curriculum

Academic writing classes help struggling students or those who want academic enrichment. Those in the latter group practice writing persuasive, comparative, and argumentative essays. Programs typically include research activities, and students learn research strategies and tips.

In writing tutoring programs, struggling writers receive extra guidance. Instructors work one-on-one with students, or in small groups, to identify specific areas of struggle. Extra credit courses and test preparation courses (for the OSSLT, SATs, etc.) are also offered, though they’re mainly targeted at high school students.

At all writing classes, your child gains a deeper understanding of writing mechanics. Grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary exercises are offered. Courses improve technical aspects of kids’ writing.

Some advanced writing classes help students broaden their range and writing portfolios required for postsecondary education. Students may be invited to submit to writing competitions at the end of the program. Kids and teens increase confidence in their writing and become exposed to the professional writing industry.

Prices for these classes begin at $50. Tutoring programs typically range around $150, though more intensive classes rise to $800. Public speaking and debate classes are included in the list above, where students learn how to write topical speeches.

Why go to writing classes?

Kids and teens gain writing skills in classes and courses above, and there are other benefits too:

  • Improve organizational skills. During the drafting and planning process, kids practice organizing ideas so that, during the writing process, the story or essay is clear to follow.
  • Benefits reading skills. With an enhanced vocabulary and insight gained into the writing process, your child will deepen their appreciation of novels, stories, and other writing.
  • Develop a personalized writing process. The writing process consists of drafting, composing, and editing. Students learn how to personalize this writing process for their specific needs.
  • Small class sizes. At a typical writing class, kids and teens receive either one-on-one instruction, or smaller teacher-to-student ratios. Feedback is more personalized and specific to each student.
  • Increased confidence and independence. Workshops in both creative and academic writing encourage kids and teens to share writing with others, accept criticism, and meet deadlines. Writing workshops improve children’s confidence in more than just writing.
