Our Opti Race CANSail 3&4 Program builds on sailing skills learned in CANSail 1&2, while also introducing elements of sailboat racing. This program is specifically tailored for younger sailors who would like to continue sailing in the smaller, single-handed Optimist dinghy, but who are competitive and love the challenge of racing. Each session will culminate in competition in a local regatta, where sailors will be able to apply all the new skills they have learned.
Regular weekly program runs from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday to Friday, however participants will also attend at least one regatta each session, which may occur on a weekend. Parent participation for regatta travel is crucial to the success of the program and building a winning team. Participants must have completed CANSail level 2 or be able to demonstrate CANSail 2 level skills in order to register for this program.
In addition to our summer programming there are also Spring and Fall training opportunities available to practice sailing skills in the windier shoulder seasons.
Character Development: This program helps build the following traits
Independence: Learning to sail develops independence on so many levels. Participants learn how to set up their boat before they sail, how to care for the boat's equipment and how to steer and chart their own course both literally and figuratively. There is no better way to grow confidence than getting in a boat!
Resilience: Sailing involves constant adaptation - to the direction of the wind, the push of the current and the course you're on. Sailors learn resilience in coping with and adapting to the ever-changing conditions they face on the water. No two days in a boat or in our program are the same!
