The Our Kids review of Adventure Valley

    our take

Adventure Valley provides a true camp experience with the benefit of being close to home. The variety of programs is broad, including all the most traditional camp experiences, though the sense of community is as well--kids have a sense that they belong to something unique, and it is. The camp is run on the campus of St. Mildred's Lightbourn School, which is exceptional in all the best ways: facilities, location, and accessibility. Lunch is included with camp fees, which might seem like a little thing, but, frankly, for busy parents, it's a delight. The program is very established, with strong staff who dedicate themselves to the culture of the camp as well as the activities offered.

I was really impressed how well run it is!

My daughter loved this camp experience and as a parent I was really impressed how well run it is. I loved all the questionnaires before the camp where they wanted to understand your child, and any fears they may have - it felt like they really wanted to know how to best support your child in their camp experience. The camp had a variety of different activities for the kids so they got to try a lot of activities they wouldn't otherwise be exposed to . This camp also provides food for the kids, including options for those with food restrictions. All of the counsellors were super engaged and interested in the kids, and my daughter really connected to them and felt really comfortable around them. We will definitely be back ... Show More

Thanks again to Ashlee and her team for creating such a wonderful environment and experience.

We had heard about Adventure Valley camp from family members living in the Oakville area. We flew from Europe to visit family in Ontario and booked our 6 year old son into AV for two weeks. We were nervous as he wouldn't know anyone and would be coming from overseas. He loved it! We even extended our vacation as our son asked if he could spend longer at the camp. He ended up going for all 4 weeks of our vacation. Thanks again to Ashlee and her team for creating such a wonderful environment and experience. We hope to be back next year ... Show More

    Simply the best

Simply the best. This was my camper’s first year of summer camp and our first year as a family of four. AVDC really helped our camper’s confidence and made him feel special and included each day. They were incredibly well-organized, from drop off with the team waving hello each morning, to lunch where they provided well-rounded meals that accounted for camper’s unique needs or allergens, to a seamless pick up. My camper was thrilled to go each day and had a lot of fun putting together costumes for dress up day. There was always something to look forward to each day! He has already asked me if a year has gone by so that he can return to camp. We will be back next year ... Show More

Wonderful camp. It was recommended to me for my son when he was 4 and was very attached. The executive director and the staff are amazing, and my son has loved going to this camp. Lunch and snacks are included, and you can opt for bussing which is also included. Love that they have very flexible cancellation policies. They are truly a wonderful place for kids. The campus they are on is beautiful, and the community feel is amazing. So much camp spirit. Can't recommend it enough ... Show More

Te counsellors are incredible with kids: full of energy, enthusiasm, and true camp spirit.

My son has attended Adventure Valley Day Camp for the past two summers, and this was my daughter’s first year — both had an absolutely wonderful experience! The counsellors are incredible with kids: full of energy, enthusiasm, and true camp spirit. They always greet the children with big smiles and take the time to really get to know each camper and their individual needs. On top of all the fun activities, my kids came home each day excited to share stories and proud of the many new friendships they made over the weeks. We also really appreciate that lunches and snacks are included (and bussing too, if desired) — it makes the experience seamless for families. My kids will likely be back next summer, and we’re so grateful for the positive memories Adventure Valley has given our family ... Show More

Interview with the Director of Adventure Valley

    Ashlee Woolfson, Camp Director

    View transcript

Transcript of our interview with Ashlee, Camp Director

What is unique about Adventure Valley?

At Adventure Valley, we believe in the power of community. We believe in making sure that every camper feels like they truly belong. Through the relationships we build between our campers and our staff, our campers feel safe to learn and to develop and grow the soft skills that they can then use outside of camp.

What type of child is successful at Adventure Valley?

At Adventure Valley, we meet every camper where they are. Our low camper-to-staff ratios ensure that every child is known as an individual, not just as a number. We get to know our campers, and we make sure that each of them can be successful. At camp, we teach life skills like empathy, perspective-taking, perseverance, self-confidence, and more.

Is your schedule structured or is it more open?

Adventure Valley runs eight one week sessions to provide maximum flexibility for our camp families. We do encourage our campers to attend a minimum of two consecutive weeks. We do this so that our campers can fully experience our family feel and our camp community. Only when campers truly feel safe and feel like they belong can they really grow and develop.

How do your staff deal with behavioural issues?

Our staff are trained to approach all behavioural issues with empathy and to consider the feelings behind every behaviour. Staff are told to talk to each camper individually and really understand where they're coming from, and use each moment as a learning experience for the future.

What do campers value most at Adventure Valley?

The number one thing that our campers value are the relationships they build at camp. I can't tell you how many camp parents have told us about lifelong friendships that their kids have made while they were at Adventure Valley. Campers talk about their counsellors year-round and return year after year to see them.

What message do you have for new campers at Adventure Valley?

All of our counsellors have crazy camp names like “Spooky” and “Sparrow” and “Batman” and “Piglet.” Every single day we have a camp-wide dance party where we do the camp dance together and sing the camp cheer. Sometimes we have crazy competitions between staff where they have fun making fools of themselves to make our campers laugh. And every Friday we have a theme day where all of our campers and staff come dressed up in the most awesome costumes. You have to be there to believe it.

    Director's Message

Welcome to our small and family style camp! I believe camp should be a place where every child feels secure and appreciated for who they are.

We go beyond summer fun to provide experiences that foster growth and develop the whole child. We focus on building life skills, like confidence, determination, kindness, and positivity.

We embed our values of trust, community, fun and curiosity into everything we do. We go where our campers can discover new experiences in a safe environment, giving them the freedom to explore who they really are, play in an inclusive zone, and find out what it means to be a friend.

And we always go to a place where campers are embraced by the spirit and values of our camp community.

    Staff and Counsellors

Adventure Valley recognizes the importance of strong summer staff in the delivery of an unforgettable summer camp experience. It’s our staff, who cultivate cooperation, kindness, and friendship, who build the foundation of a strong camp community. As a team, our staff continues to challenge itself: how can we make each day unforgettable? How can we bring our campers closer together? We know we’ve done our job if our campers never want the day to end, never want the summer to be over, never want to lose the feeling they belong – just the way they are. We treat our staff like family and support each other all day, every day. We know that our staff, more than any other single factor, make AVDC the incredible camp that it is.
