The Spring Enrichment program is designed for children who are looking for greater challenges and new ways to stimulate their interest in math. Each enrichment course has a different special topic.

Grade 1/2 Enrichment: Math FUNdamentals
Course Description: A section of Saturday Math Club designed especially for grade 1/2s. Participants will approach fundamental math concepts through a balance of hands-on activities, games, and crafts, and pencil-and-paper math. This program is designed in the same spirit as our other math clubs and summer camps, but tailored to the math skill level of our youngest participants. This program aims to teach and reinforce topics from the grade 1/2 curriculum.
Grade 2/3 Enrichment: The Art of Mathematics
Course Description: In this program, learners will have the opportunity to explore the intersection between mathematics and art through hands-on activities, including drawing, crafts, and origami. Students will engage with various artistic mediums while developing their understanding of fundamental concepts such as counting, geometry, and patterns. This program develops collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills through creative applications of art and mathematics.
Grade 3/4 Enrichment: Binary to Beyond - A Journey Through Number Systems
Course Description: Numbers have been with us for a long time, and our methods of counting have evolved greatly from using our fingers and toes. In this program, students will explore different contemporary and historic number systems from around the world, including binary, hexadecimal, Babylonian, Mayan, Egyptian, and even Indigenous number systems. Together we will explore systems outside of the base-10 system that we are used to, and learn how to apply these systems through algebra, patterning, combinatorics and geometry.
Grade 5/6 Enrichment: Hidden in Plain Sight - The Study of Cryptography
Course Description: In this program, students will learn about cryptography and its real-world applications in fields like cybersecurity. During the program, students will use various encryption methods such as the Caesar Cipher and Pig Pen Cipher to crack codes and understand key concepts that are essential to the study of cryptography. Students will also strengthen their understanding of broader mathematical topics like number theory and combinatorics through hands-on problems and activities.
Grade 7/8 Enrichment: The Mathematics of Mechanics
Course Description: This course introduces students to the mathematics behind how buildings stay standing and how vehicles move. Using ratios, algebra, graphing, measurement, and proportional reasoning, students will explore forces, balance, motion, and energy through hands-on engineering challenges. The course is centered upon two major design projects: constructing a model building and creating a small motorized vehicle, with each project broken down into progressive mathematical challenges. Through testing, revising, redesigning and collaborating, students will discover how math drives real-world engineering and problem-solving.
Grade 9/10 Enrichment: Networks and Finance
Course Description: This course examines two powerful applications of mathematics: network systems and personal finance. Students will explore networks and connections through elementary examples such as point-and-line diagrams, and will study basic financial concepts such as savings, interest, and making data-informed financial decisions. By linking network structures to financial behaviors, students will gain a deeper understanding of how relationships between people, institutions and investments shape financial systems.
