  • Summary Profile

    Toronto Kidz answered our questions

Who are you as an organization?

We offer a wide range of themes for ages 5 to 12. Multi-activity camps for 5-8 years-old follow a weekly theme like Pirates, Dinosaurs, Animals, etc. - while specialized camps for 9-12 years-old focus on Science, Leadership, Magic. Campers are mentally and physically active, learn team play, social skills and independence. Weekly field trips take them to Toronto's main attractions as the ROM, the Zoo, the Aquarium, etc.

    • Special needs: Yes, mild support.
A few of our campers have special needs.
    • LGBTQ+ friendly community

What do you do differently or uniquely well?

"Our daily crafts are a highlight for kids and parents alike. Campers proudly show to their parents what they have done each day and they can take it home with them. Also, the weekly themes make each week different and fun so it doesn't matter if a camper comes all summer to our camp, every week there is a different fun theme, a different field trip and different crafts and activities to do related to the weekly theme. The field trips are probably the highlight of the week for the campers, from going on a school bus, a first for many campers, to the destinations that we visit like the ROM, the Zoo, the Aquarium, the Ontario Science Centre, Casa Loma, Bata Shoe Museum, the Toronto Railway Museum and even a pirate cruise."

Who are your staff and counsellors?

"We hire professional teachers as Location Managers at each camp location thus there is always a professional responsible for it. We also have a Program Coordinator at each location to make sure the quality of the programming is fulfill. We have two camp counsellors per group of up to 12 campers. One of them is over the age of 18, usually a university or college student, supported by a junior counsellor who is 16 years old or older. Additionally, there are Camp Directors who work together with the Location Managers to make sure everything runs smoothly. "

What do families need to know about registration?

"The registration process is very straightforward and can be done entirely online through our website. We provide support over chat, phone and email to answer any question and make the process as simple and fast as possible to our clients. If a preferred location is full for a particular week, you can register on our wait-list and we will reach out to you as soon as space becomes available. "

The Our Kids review of Toronto Kidz

    our take

Brigitte Gallegos, founder and director of Toronto Kidz Summer Camp created the camp to make the most of what the city has to offer. She wanted to allow kids to explore areas of their city, and to let experience the full range of what it has to offer. The programs—a series of weekly day camp sessions offered throughout the summer months—have been designed to access those possibilities. Each session is built around a specific theme, and the entire city is a programming resource: Pirates Week includes a cruise around Centre Island; Animals and Nature Week includes a trip to High Park Nature Centre; Pokémon Week includes a visit to Fort York. It is run out of a space within the St. Martin-in-the-Fields church, just north of High Park and in the heart of one of the city’s most varied urban communities. The location, in any way you care to look at it, has a lot to offer. There are private green spaces and a wealth of indoor activity space, all of it providing a welcome break from the bustle of the city. Each day at camp includes crafts and drawing, and stimulation with music and dance. The course of each day includes all of that, from running games in the park, to sitting quietly to record the day’s events in a journal.

My son had a blast at this camp. He came home everyday feeling happy with a wonderful craft to share and tell us about. (He's usually very close-lipped about his days so this was a welcome surprise!) Brigitte and her staff create a safe, organized space for kids to play and learn within. You can tell that they love kids and are skilled at programming that is developmentally-appropriate and fun. Highly recommended ... Read More

Second week in and so far so good. The director has been extremely accommodating and informative. The days are very structured but not rigid and they do have flexibility depending on weather and children’s mood. They have great visitors and weekly adventure trips. Our daughter is coming home daily with lots to talk about and crafts she’s created. I think overall it’s a great camp and the smile and excitement from our daughter backs that up ... Read More

Elissa (Parent)We highly recommend Toronto Kidz

We have had a wonderful time with Toronto Kidz through their in-person summer camps and their weeknight virtual art workshops. Last summer our daughter Vivienne loved the weekly themed camps, and thrived in the environment which offered a safe, clean and socially distanced space for kids. There was a comprehensive schedule of various activities appropriate for her age ( 5 1/2 years). At camp Vivienne found a true passion for arts and crafts and was thrilled with the outdoor adventures that they went on. We highly recommend Toronto Kidz, and really appreciate their reasonable costs and the various programming that they offer. ... Read More

This was our first year with Toronto Kidz Camp, but it definitely won’t be our last! Our 4.5 year old has LOVED every week he’s spent here, especially all of the amazing field trips and themed crafts. He’s also spoken so lovingly about all of his counsellors, and it’s so wonderful to see and hear about how amazing they are with our kiddos. Toronto Kidz is very well organized and it was great that they are so communicative (they posted a daily schedule onsite and made available an online parent guide). My child loved the camps. The activities were fun and the art they bought home was amazing. The field trips really make the camp special. I love that they have an onsite manager that is an either an ECE/licensed teacher to ensure everything runs smoothly. • Exploring the city with Toronto Kidz

“It’s such a great city for kids,” says Brigitte Gallegos, founder and director of Toronto Kidz Summer Camp. Certainly, she created the camp for precisely that reason: to make the most of what the city has to offer. She wanted to allow kids to explore areas of their city, “to let them see that there are so many possibilities, so many things that they can explore and do.”

      Finding a balance

It’s as much about getting out and seeing the world as it is about making connections between communities, ideas, and people. Gallegos comes to all of that honestly, having worked as a travel director for adult and youth groups, most recently as part of the Me To We staff.

Toronto Kidz is run out of a space within the St. Martin-in-the-Fields church, just north of High Park and in the heart of one of the city’s most varied urban communities. The location, in any way you care to look at it, has a lot to offer. There are private green spaces and a wealth of indoor activity space, all of it providing a welcome break from the bustle of the city.

Though, of course, the bustle is good too. “We know how great urban life can be for families.” For Gallegos, it’s about finding the right balance. “There’s a balance between being active outdoors and indoors,” as well as that between fine and gross motor skills. Each day at camp includes crafts and drawing, and stimulation with music and dance. The course of each day includes all of that, from running games in the park, to sitting quietly to record the day’s events in a journal.

In all, each day at Toronto Kidz is a pretty good day. Learning, growing, and building on personal strengths. “I like the way that children explore the world,” says Gallegos, “and I want to help them do that. It’s so nice to see kids be passionate about something.” She’s right of course. It really is.
