The Our Kids review of Run The Flex

    our take

Run The Flex’s summer dance camps for kids as young as four get them excited about dance and moving their bodies. People who know dance say it’s the studio that makes dance fun, and theirs, right on Yonge, downtown, is welcoming and vibey with coloured lights and an intimate black-box feel. Camps and intensives here are energetic, fun, and of course, inclusive, taught by talented dance teachers. While camps and programs are focused on learning hip-hop moves, they also include typical camp activities like crafts. Kids can let go and be themselves no matter what their experience or skill. They make new friends, unleash their physical creativity, and gain confidence by taking small risks in a nonjudgmental environment led by vibrant instructors. Intensives for older, more experienced dancers take them deeper into dance, with a variety of street styles and techniques.

Transcript of our interview with Kristina and Hedley, Run The Flex: Parent Interview with Kristina and Hedley T

How did you know Run the Flex was the right fit?

    Hedley T

We knew Run the Flex was the right fit, seeing Ollie get hyped to go to class and to leave every week.

    Kristina

We noticed that he was stoked every time to check the Dropbox videos and practice at home, and he just wanted to keep dancing. And their teacher, Tanya, is amazing with them and really is patient and helps them learn all the things that they need to learn, and she's fun. So Ollie loves it, and that's how we knew.

    Hedley T

Having access to the Dropbox every week to see their progress.

    Kristina

Also being able to watch them on the TV every week because at other dance studios, the doors just close and you don't see anything. So at least now, watching on the TV in the waiting room, it's nice to see what they're doing and what they're learning.

What’s unique about Run the Flex?

    Hedley T

The first thing that got our attention was the feel of the whole Run the Flex studio. It's more of a hip-hop vibe, and we appreciate that about it because our kid loves to dance hip-hop.

Being a DJ and someone that's active in Toronto's nightlife, seeing a lot of the different students and instructors that are, you know, part of the dance community and seeing familiar faces kind of gave us more peace of mind, I guess.

    Kristina

Knowing that the kids are in good hands and that they're learning from real instructors who have real dance experience. One more thing that we love about Run the Flex is the availability and the openness and the communication with the owners. They've been amazing and so helpful and responsive and just so professional, so we love that.

Was there any personal growth you saw in your child?

    Hedley T

I've noticed a lot of personal growth and confidence in Ollie since he started. Every week he's learning new dance moves or a new song. And, you know, he'll go to school and he'll show his classmates his new moves or put them on to new music that he's learned at class.

    Kristina

I feel like with every class there's new choreography that he learns and he's hyped about it and he just wants to keep dancing and he loves to perform. And he loves to show us everything that he's learned. So, big confidence boost there.

How can a parent support their child to get the most out of this experience?

    Kristina

I think there's a lot that us parents can do to help them with this whole dance experience. Like, one of that being showing up to class every week, getting them excited about going to class, and then also after class watching the Dropbox videos and reminding your kid to practice what's been taught. I think that helps them keep up with what's going on in class.

    Hedley T

One thing, I guess, we remind him to listen. To listen, pay attention during class, to get him in the right mindset to learn and focus, stay focused. And stay focused, definitely stay focused, especially with the young kids.

    Kristina

Yes, because they tend to fool around a lot.

What does your child say about their experience?

    Kristina

Our kid really loves going to Run the Flex Kids, and his experience there has been nothing but amazing. He really loves dancing, like street-style dancing, so hip-hop, breakdancing, he loves all of it, and he's getting a taste of it with every class. He also loves his teacher and feels so confident with her, also very comfortable with her. Oh, and he loves to show everyone what he's learned, and he wants to keep practicing.

Is there anything else about Run the Flex you'd like to add?

    Hedley T

We love Run the Flex Kids, and we love how friendly and supportive the staff was with Ollie.

    Kristina

The owners are great. All the other staff around, like the front desk people, everyone's so nice and helpful, and that's really important in a dance studio. Thanks, Run the Flex Kids!
