Child 1 Age 13 (Female)
Program(s) focused in Adventure (multi), Survival skills, Wilderness Skills
(4.5) Overall experience
My daughter enjoyed it, but I think they were a bit bored, as her and her friend were much older and there weren't a lot their age. We would have loved to see more paddle and more opportunities for stuff their age. She loved learning and being with her friend. It was a perfect location. I’m not sure if she will go back this summer, but I will ask. An LIT water program would be a great idea if you don’t have one. To help build leadership skills.
(4.5) Reason for choosing the camp
She needed to do something, and everything else seemed too young for her and her friend. It was in a good location, and both girls were excited to learn and participate. I think morning and afternoon trips would have gone a long way. We need more teen-friendly stuff to keep them fully engaged
(4) Program quality and activities
Again, we wanted something that worked for teens, and they were able to get to one on their own as we work. We drove some of the time. We found they tapped out when the water stuff was done and would have benefited from more time on the water. It’s hard with teens, so we understand. I may send my son this summer, as he is 12 and needs something.
(4.5) Social dynamics and experience
No new friends, but it was great for her and her BFF, and a great pre-high-school initiative for them to travel on the TTC and navigate together on getting there from South Etobicoke. It also allowed them independence. I think more kids their age would have been beneficial for them as well, as I think they were the oldest
(4) Skills and growth
I think they both gained confidence on the water and teamwork. They seemed to enjoy being together on the same vessel more than being independent. Said they’d like to be out more. Gained independence getting there and back home. It was good overall. Maybe more age-appropriate activities would have helped and allowed them to grow even more
(5) Staff/Instructors/Counsellors
They were very happy with the staff. I did not meet them, but the girls had nice things to say. All my interactions over email with them were great, and it seemed well run. It is again hard with teens in any setting. Especially the transition from grade 8 to high school. I think anything on the water is good.
(5) Advice and tips
Not really much to say. It’s a really cool city activity if you’re outdoorsy and a rare opportunity to explore the city in the water. Not much around our area caters to this, so take advantage of the camp and access it if you can! It won’t disappoint at all. Lots of sunscreen, and it all depends on your kids' age
Neither of my boys have taken to sports across the different activities and programs that we signed them up for. This was the first program where they brought up signing up for multiple weeks to conti...
