The Our Kids review of Pedalheads Bike, Swim and Sport

    our take

Pedalheads began more than three decades ago as principally a biking program. Kids came, learned to ride bikes, and then rode them, together, all over the place. That has continued to this day, though the organization has grown during the intervening years in every way possible: size, numbers, locations, levels, and programs. There are now 75 locations in 4 provinces and 4 US states.  There’s good reason for that kind of growth: these are quality programs run expertly, with great care. It’s also due to the focus of the programs—it’s not about training for the Olympics, rather the focus is first on having fun, together with peers and mentors, and growing into active, healthy lifestyles. Kids feel less of a pressure to excel, perhaps as they would in a typical dance studio or gymnastics gym. Without the pressure of those kinds of goals, at least occupying such a central place in the culture of the camps, kids are free to develop skills, yes, but with fun, active engagement, and personal development as the true measures of success. In that, for many families inundated with so many competitive options, Pedalheads is a very welcome breath of fresh air. That isn’t to say there isn’t ample opportunity for skill development—there is—but it’s all within a charming context of, first, just getting out there and doing it. It’s about lighting a fire, before anything else, inspiring kids toward living actively.

      What’s unique about Pedalheads camp?

I think she was really excited to start riding a bike. Initially we joined with friends and they were all at the same level: they were still on training wheels. And I was actually really intrigued because a lot of other parents said that by the end of the week, the kids would be on a two-wheeler. And I was like, in one week

She's actually been to Pedalheads three times—three different camps. But when we did the first one, she was four and it was only half a day, so I said, “oh, in half a day? What can they really do in one week?” But, wow, after the first day, we went to pick her up and the training wheels were off. Like, my husband and I were just… our minds were blown. [Laughs]. This is the first day—the first half day of her camp.

I love how it's just, like, focused on learning with the bikes. My husband rides his bike a lot, so bike safety is important for us. So I like how it was just focused on the bikes and that they learned to ride. That's the best part.

Was this your child’s first experience with camp?

The first year, she loved it so much and we were so impressed. And then the second year, she moved up a level. And then this third year, yes, she kept moving up because there's so many levels that they can go. This past summer they took them on the roads and, yeah, she was more advanced. So it was really good.

Was there any change or noticeable personal growth you saw in your child after time at camp?

Yes. I think because we've done it for three summers, we can see that she's grown to love biking. And Pedalheads has a lot to do with that.

Her first camp, again, she was still on training wheels, and …  she was learning how to ride a two-wheeler. But I love that these past two summers in the more advanced camps, as she's moved up, they integrate the safety aspect, and there's a lot of emphasis on that.

And this past summer there was the pandemic. And as long as she would be outside, we felt comfortable sending my daughter to Pedalheads—because they were outside, which we loved, and because their protocols were really consistent and very clear. Communication from Pedalheads camp to the parents.

There was, like, a big change from when she was four, and now she's almost eight. So yeah, she's learned a lot from Pedalheads, and we're so grateful.

I think as parents, there's not as much knowledge and emphasis on road safety: proper signaling and all of the safety aspects. So I think for us, that was hands down the best for her. And had we just taught her on our own, I don't think she would learn all of those things that she's already learned.

How can a parent support their child to get the most out of this camp?

It's not easy to learn to ride a bike. And I think a part of why we were so intrigued to enroll her into Pedalheads is because then she could feel like she's doing it on her own. It's different with us. We can teach her. But riding a bike is hard. It's not easy, especially when they're a little bit younger. It's something that takes time and patience.

I think that not being afraid to get on the bike is a good start, especially when they're little. Like, Avery was only four, right. But she had already been on her bike a lot. But I can see how it could be a little bit intimidating or scary for a younger one who's never really had experience on a bike.

And I think [it helps] to encourage them, [that] they're going to be around other kids who are also on the same level. I think if it was like a mixed level, that would be so tough for the kids. But Pedalheads is so good at making sure that they're all on the same level. So I think parents can encourage their kids, [and tell them]: “There's going to be other kids there, and you're going to be all on the same level. You're learning all at the same pace.” And that gets them excited, right? Like, it's not mum and dad, it's camp—so it's exciting anyways.

And I think with a skill like learning to ride a bike—in my experience with Avery—it's like she kind of needs the encouragement that nobody is ahead of you or they're not too little. She wants to know that we're all starting at the same time. We're all learning the same skills together.

What does your child say about Pedalheads?

She loves it. We did it three summers in a row, right? So every spring, when we're looking to enroll her for things in summer, we always ask her, “what would you like to do?” And these past three summers, she said, yes, “I want to go back to Pedalheads.” So she loves it, and she loves riding her bike. Not every kid likes everything, but she loves her bike.

And then this year, because she was older, we weren't sure if she wanted to do it. But she said, “Mummy, I think I'm going to be able to go on the roads now with my instructor.” So she's like—that was exciting. So on the days they would go on the roads and through trails, that was her favorite part. She'd always come back and be like, “we went out today!” She's like, “I did my signals!” She's really excited when she gets to use her signals on the road. [Laughs]. So, yeah, she loved it.

What would you say to any prospective parents looking into this program?

We did the one-week session when Avery was still on training wheels. And it was Monday to Friday, I believe ,and only half a day. But I feel like they do a bike parade at the end and that's the best part. Because on the Monday they're still on training wheels but by the Friday they're in the bike parade. And I think with that age group when they're just learning—and if they have no prior experience with being on a two-wheeler—it's the best camp, because it's so rewarding for everybody. Especially for the kids.

Even my husband was like, this is the best camp. Because, again, it's not easy to teach your kid to ride a bike. It's not easy, right? it takes time. And I just love the concept that by the end of the week, they're going to be riding a two-wheeler. It's fantastic. For the little kids that are still on training wheels, this is their introduction to it. I think it's great.

And they don't just do biking. Like, they do have little breaks in between. There are rainy days because it's mainly outside. And on the rainy days, they have other activities they can do.

So it's fun. It's not just about riding the bike. And I think they would get the kids excited for the bike parade—which was like the best part. They would decorate their bikes. And one day they had a bike wash, which was great. Like, they got the water out, which is perfect in the summer. So it's fun. It's so much fun.

      Final thoughts?

I love that it's so different. It's such a different type of camp. The instructors are amazing. We've had a couple of instructors that were the same from the year before.

And the instructors are fantastic. They're really great. They've really done a good job of interviewing and choosing their instructors. Because, again, like I said, it's not easy. It's not an easy thing: we tried to teach her how to ride a bike and it was like—it's hard. So, you know, it's a lot of patience and fun and they still make it fun. So the instructors are fantastic. And we just love that. It's just a different type of camp. Not your typical day camp. And it's outside. We love that it's outside. So yeah—overall, so great.

We're going to get my son [involved], actually. And my son is only two. So he'll be younger than she was when she started. And I think they do a [coed] bike camp, so we'll get him in this summer. He'll be three, so it'll be interesting to see what they do with the really little ones.

But it's so good for confidence building, because the kids see that they've already done that on day one, that their training wheels are off on day one .It's so good for confidence building and for them to be like, like, I can do this. And then it pushes them to the Friday, and then they're riding a two-wheel. It's awesome.

Margaret S. (Parent)"There is no bike camp better then Pedalheads"

"There is no bike camp better then Pedalheads. I have four children and my first two children went through Pedalheads 6-7 years ago and now my third child (6) has just completed the Newbies and will be starting Newbies 2 next week. I really did not think he would have picked up riding a bike so quickly (second day), but I should not have doubted Pedalheads because if they taught my first (15 years now) son how to ride a bike within a week, they certainly can teach any child how to ride. Just love how the instructors teach and have so much patience. They are #1 on my list for teaching my children how to ride a bike and swimming. I also love their swimming classes too! ... Read More

Dee L N (Parent)"I love, love, love the biking camp!"

I love, love, love the biking camp! My 5y old was very sad and dejected that he was the 'only' one who couldn't bike without training wheels and was refusing to bike when friends were around. Coach Becky and Coach Mathew were kind, and caring. My son was very worried about falling and hurting himself. They really coached him through his fears. At the end of the week, this same child was weaving around cones and doing shoulder checks and stops at stop signs without his training wheels! Coach Becky and Coach Mathew are miracle workers! We highly recommend Pedalheads (and will be letting our friends know about that) and cant wait to join another session! ... Read More

    Tanya Dissegna (Parent)"Fabulous bike leaders"

"My kids fought me and fought me when it came to taking training wheels off or learning how to ride. Both my boys learned how to ride during their first camp! You'd think that no further camps would be needed in the future...but then I learned that higher levels include road safety, including hand signals, plus bike maintenance and more. Fabulous bike leaders...enthusiastic young people who really connect with kids. I'm so happy. It's worth every penny! ... Read More

"We loved this camp!!! Our son was so scared of getting on his bike and then is started riding it with confidence in 3 days! He loved the instructors and it is something we will look forward to doing every year."

Feresh Dan (Parent)"Our guy was riding on two wheels by day three."

"Truly a great group. Our son who is 5 was having a tough time trying to ride. We put him in the week long program not with a lot of expectations. To our complete surprise our guy was riding on two wheels by day three. Now he rides with no problem and is very comfortable and familiar with this bike. They teach them more than just riding. Allie was awesome and quite committed to her job. Our son loved her at the same time she got the most out of him. Highly recommend their program. Thanks Allie! ... Read More

Cara Q. (Parent)"Really pleased to see how much fun my son is having on his bike"

Really impressed with Isabella, Lauren and team at the Renfrew Elementary Pedalheads sessions. Before I had children, I loved watching the Pedalheads classes because the kids are so focused and absorbed in learning. When my son was finally old enough, we enrolled him and his buddy and were not disappointed. It occurs to me that the instructors have learned how to foster great trust with each kid. Throughout the week, I never once saw someone scared/crying/dis-engaged - emotional states that are totally normal for kids who are learning a new and often complex skill. I believe Pedalheads' success lies in ensuring that instructors create a good bond which enables fun learning. Really pleased to see how much fun my son is having on his bike - and how proud he is with himself. Thanks Isabella and crew for this positive learning experience! ... Read More

Ine Van Aken (Parent)"The most amazing instructors": Pedalheads Swim

"My 6-year-old has been in swimming lessons since he was 4 months old. Despite being in swimming for this long at other locations outside of Pedalheads swim he has always been very hesitant in the water. He just wasn't making any progress and he was getting very frustrated. Often times classes were so short that by the time he got comfortable in the water, the kids had to get out again. It was hit or miss when teamed up with instructors. Some instructors were more engaging than others. We started lessons at Pedalheads Swim the minute we found out a location opened up near us. The hour-long classes and knowledgeable instructors made all the difference. He finally gained the confidence needed to start progressing and he absolutely loves his classes. It's his favourite afterschool activity! Soon after, my youngest (now three) started classes as well. He was just a baby, and even though I was hesitant about his age, that fear was unfounded. The most amazing instructors took care of my little guy and contributed to his love for swimming from a very young age. The pools are warmer than most rec centre pools, the instructors are incredibly well trained, the supervisors are phenomenal and super helpful at all times. When faced with a challenge, they work together and overcome the challenge. My family is very happy to have made the switch to Pedalheads Swim. It's been life changing!" ... Read More

My 4 year old daughter had no interest on her bike until Pedalheads! She learned to ride on her first day! They gave her the confidence but also challenged her to keep her engaged. We were so impressed that we enrolled our 7 year old son into their swim program which is equally as good. It’s the energy of the staff who enjoy their job that makes the difference for us ... Balance Bikers: This class is meant to help kids improve their riding skills, balance, and coordination with a balance/run bike; any bikes with pedals should register for our TNT class.

Trikes 'N' Trainers: Kids will learn how to stop, steer, and pedal as well as very basic bike safety.  We will not be taking training wheels off.  This class is to get kids having fun and moving on their bikes!

Level 1: Newbees are riders who cannot yet ride a two-wheeler independently, and still require assistance from either their training wheels or an individual.

Level 2: Advanced Newbees are riders who can balance and pedal a two-wheeler without assistance, but still need a light push to start, or assistance to stop.

Level 3: Pedalheads® are competent riders with the fundamental skills to start, stop and ride independently.

Level 4: Advanced Pedalheads® rider should be able to ride in a straight line for at least 20 meters (75ft), do a shoulder check, and hold a hand signal for 3 seconds while maintaining their straight line riding.

Level 5: Gearheads are riders who are very comfortable on their bikes, have mastered the fundamental skills of braking, steering and control, and are able to ride safely on quiet residential roads. Gearheads are able to ride in a straight line for long distances, hold a hand signal for 5 seconds, and do shoulder checks safely.

Level 6: Treadheads provides a refresher on shifting gears, safety rules, and the necessary skills for road riding (see Gearheads).

Pedalheads Mountain Biking (PHMB): Levels vary from those first discovering mountain biking, to those looking to work on advanced skills like drops, jumps and downhill riding. Join us to discover the amazing sport of mountain biking!

If there's a bigger smiile than the one your kid has showing you they know how to ride a bike by themselves for the first time, I haven't seen it yet.

    • Pedalheads...more than just a camp

Teaching a child to ride a bike is one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever been involved in. In my 9 years with Pedalheads, I've seen thousands of kids arrive to our camps with hesitation, only to leave us with smiles on their faces and a new found love for biking. While on the surface Pedalheads may appear to be a camp for kids, I would say it's much more than that. Through our cycling programs, children are able to build confidence in themselves, as tackling new challenges on a bike can help them in their quest to overcome other challenges in the future. There are few better feelings than encountering a child who begins the week saying "I can't" only to come to the realization of "I did!" One of the best parts of being with Pedalheads all these years is seeing the many familiar faces. Often times, as kids get older, the experiences they had at four years old are only remembered if they were very special. I know for myself, one of the only things I remember about being 4 was going to Expo '86 with my Mom in Vancouver. It was a terrific experience, but for the life of me, I can't remember much else about that year. When 10 year olds come up to me yelling "Hey Nick!" and remind me about the time I taught them how to ride their bike, I'm completely blown away as I know it was a special moment for them. Seeing how far they've come on their bikes since the first time we met is something I can't describe with mere words. I've personally seen that the experience a child receives at Pedalheads goes beyond the weeks spent at the camp, and I can safely say that the same holds true for me. Whether it's a youngster improving bike skills, a parent waiting for a major breakthrough or an instructor helping a child reach a milestone, the time spent at Pedalheads is something that won't be forgotten. -Vancouver Centre Nick (Pedalheads Supervisor for 5 years)
