Pedalheads began more than three decades ago as principally a biking program. Kids came, learned to ride bikes, and then rode them, together, all over the place. That has continued to this day, though the organization has grown during the intervening years in every way possible: size, numbers, locations, levels, and programs. There are now 75 locations in 4 provinces and 4 US states. There’s good reason for that kind of growth: these are quality programs run expertly, with great care. It’s also due to the focus of the programs—it’s not about training for the Olympics, rather the focus is first on having fun, together with peers and mentors, and growing into active, healthy lifestyles. Kids feel less of a pressure to excel, perhaps as they would in a typical dance studio or gymnastics gym. Without the pressure of those kinds of goals, at least occupying such a central place in the culture of the camps, kids are free to develop skills, yes, but with fun, active engagement, and personal development as the true measures of success. In that, for many families inundated with so many competitive options, Pedalheads is a very welcome breath of fresh air. That isn’t to say there isn’t ample opportunity for skill development—there is—but it’s all within a charming context of, first, just getting out there and doing it. It’s about lighting a fire, before anything else, inspiring kids toward living actively.

At Pedalheads, our goal is to provide your child with the right level so he/she will feel safe, excited and challenged by all the skills and activities at camp.
Children are constantly growing, learning and developing so we expect that there may be some moving around to find the perfect match. Try to determine what level would be best suited for your child and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call us.
Balance Bikers: This class is meant to help kids improve their riding skills, balance, and coordination with a balance/run bike; any bikes with pedals should register for our TNT class.
Trikes 'N' Trainers: Kids will learn how to stop, steer, and pedal as well as very basic bike safety. We will not be taking training wheels off. This class is to get kids having fun and moving on their bikes!
Level 1: Newbees are riders who cannot yet ride a two-wheeler independently, and still require assistance from either their training wheels or an individual.
Level 2: Advanced Newbees are riders who can balance and pedal a two-wheeler without assistance, but still need a light push to start, or assistance to stop.
Level 3: Pedalheads® are competent riders with the fundamental skills to start, stop and ride independently.
Level 4: Advanced Pedalheads® rider should be able to ride in a straight line for at least 20 meters (75ft), do a shoulder check, and hold a hand signal for 3 seconds while maintaining their straight line riding.
Level 5: Gearheads are riders who are very comfortable on their bikes, have mastered the fundamental skills of braking, steering and control, and are able to ride safely on quiet residential roads. Gearheads are able to ride in a straight line for long distances, hold a hand signal for 5 seconds, and do shoulder checks safely.
Level 6: Treadheads provides a refresher on shifting gears, safety rules, and the necessary skills for road riding (see Gearheads).
Pedalheads Mountain Biking (PHMB): Levels vary from those first discovering mountain biking, to those looking to work on advanced skills like drops, jumps and downhill riding. Join us to discover the amazing sport of mountain biking!

If there's a bigger smiile than the one your kid has showing you they know how to ride a bike by themselves for the first time, I haven't seen it yet.
Buzz Bishop - DadCAMP
Teaching a child to ride a bike is one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever been involved in. In my 9 years with Pedalheads, I've seen thousands of kids arrive to our camps with hesitation, only to leave us with smiles on their faces and a new found love for biking. While on the surface Pedalheads may appear to be a camp for kids, I would say it's much more than that. Through our cycling programs, children are able to build confidence in themselves, as tackling new challenges on a bike can help them in their quest to overcome other challenges in the future. There are few better feelings than encountering a child who begins the week saying "I can't" only to come to the realization of "I did!" One of the best parts of being with Pedalheads all these years is seeing the many familiar faces. Often times, as kids get older, the experiences they had at four years old are only remembered if they were very special. I know for myself, one of the only things I remember about being 4 was going to Expo '86 with my Mom in Vancouver. It was a terrific experience, but for the life of me, I can't remember much else about that year. When 10 year olds come up to me yelling "Hey Nick!" and remind me about the time I taught them how to ride their bike, I'm completely blown away as I know it was a special moment for them. Seeing how far they've come on their bikes since the first time we met is something I can't describe with mere words. I've personally seen that the experience a child receives at Pedalheads goes beyond the weeks spent at the camp, and I can safely say that the same holds true for me. Whether it's a youngster improving bike skills, a parent waiting for a major breakthrough or an instructor helping a child reach a milestone, the time spent at Pedalheads is something that won't be forgotten. -Vancouver Centre Nick (Pedalheads Supervisor for 5 years)
