Counselor-in-Training (CIT) is a two-session overnight program for teens ages 15–16, designed to introduce youth to the training and responsibilities of camp staff. The first session is an intensive leadership and counseling program where participants learn communication, conflict resolution, goal setting, camper care, program facilitation, and teamwork skills. The second session is a partial shadow week, giving CITs hands-on experience acting as junior counselors, supporting campers, and learning from mentors while gaining practical leadership experience.

What makes this program special

CIT blends skill development, mentorship, and real-world practice, giving teens the chance to learn what it takes to be a camp leader. Participants develop responsibility, professionalism, problem-solving abilities, and confidence while guiding campers, collaborating with staff, and contributing to the success of daily camp operations.

Program focus areas

The CIT program develops core skills in multiple areas:

  • Camp Operations & Responsibility – CITs gain an understanding of camp policies, emergency procedures, program facilitation, and professionalism, building accountability and readiness for future leadership roles.
  • Personal Growth – Teens are challenged to step outside their comfort zones, try new skills, and reflect on their development as leaders and counselors.
  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills – Through active participation, conflict resolution, and counseling practice, CITs build confidence in listening, guiding, and supporting others.
  • Leadership & Teamwork – CITs lead activities, support staff, and mentor younger campers while learning effective collaboration.

What a typical day looks like

First session (Training): Mornings include leadership workshops, team-building challenges, and skill-building sessions. Afternoons focus on applying these skills in supervised activities, with evenings offering reflection, mentorship discussions, and group bonding.

Second session (Shadow Week): CITs assist staff with activities, mentor campers, and experience real camp operations. They practice leadership, problem-solving, and communication while contributing meaningfully to camp life.

Takeaways

By the end of the CIT program, participants gain leadership and counseling skills, stronger interpersonal abilities, and a practical understanding of camp operations. Teens leave with confidence, professionalism, and a sense of accomplishment in supporting and guiding others.

CIT at Camp Kee-Mo-Kee is where teens prepare for future leadership, gain hands-on experience, and learn the rewards of guiding, mentoring, and supporting a vibrant camp community.

Character Development: This program helps build the following traits

  • Responsibility: CITs take ownership of their actions while supporting staff and mentoring campers. By following expectations, assisting in activities, and learning camp procedures, teens build accountability, reliability, and an understanding of how their choices impact the community.
  • Interpersonal skills: CITs develop empathy, communication, and teamwork by working closely with campers, peers, and staff. Through mentoring, conflict resolution, and collaborative tasks, they strengthen listening, guidance, and problem-solving abilities essential for effective leadership and community engagement.
