Leadership in Training (LIT) is a two-session overnight program designed for teens ready to grow as leaders and give back to the camp community. The first session focuses on developing leadership, teamwork, and communication skills in a supportive, hands-on environment. The second session allows LITs to return as volunteers, gaining real experience in various staff roles, supporting activities, and contributing to the smooth running of camp.

What makes this program special

LIT blends skill-building, mentorship, and practical experience, giving teens the opportunity to learn from camp leaders, guide younger campers, and actively contribute to the camp community. Participants practice responsibility, problem-solving, and collaboration while strengthening confidence and independence.

Program focus areas

The LIT program draws on all aspects of camp life:

  • Personal Growth – LITs are challenged to step outside their comfort zone, try new skills, and reflect on their growth as leaders.
  • Volunteer Experience – In the second session, teens gain up to 30 volunteer hours by assisting staff, learning roles, and practicing service to the community.
  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills – Through active participation, LITs build confidence in listening, guiding, and supporting others.
  • Leadership & Teamwork – Teens lead cabin activities, collaborate on group challenges, and mentor younger campers.

What a typical day looks like

First session: Mornings include leadership training, team-building challenges, and cabin rotations to practice communication and problem-solving. Afternoons focus on applying these skills in real camp activities, while evenings feature reflective discussions and group bonding.

Second session (Volunteer Week): LITs support various staff roles, assist with activities, and help campers while gaining hands-on experience in camp operations. They learn responsibility, organization, and collaboration while contributing meaningfully to the camp community.

Takeaways

By the end of the program, LITs leave with enhanced leadership abilities, stronger teamwork and communication skills, real volunteer experience, and a deeper understanding of how a camp community thrives. They gain confidence, independence, and the satisfaction of making a positive impact on others.

LIT at Camp Kee-Mo-Kee is where teens grow as leaders, learn by doing, and experience the rewards of guiding, mentoring, and serving within a vibrant camp community.
