The Our Kids review of McMichael Children and Youth Art Camps and Programs

The McMichael facility is as much of a national treasure as the art that it houses. You really can’t praise it enough—it’s truly a jewel in the crown of Canadian arts. In addition to year round programs, the summer sessions, in particular, unabashedly get kids involved up to their elbows in art, from creation to appreciation. The sessions are active, though created to really promote the work and the collections to kids on their level, inspiring them to better appreciate their talents as well as the talents of those around them. The experience of being at the collection, too, creates a sense of ownership for the works collected there. The gallery intentionally blurs the line between art and environment, and the camps seek to extend that, getting kids out into the world, and to see how that world is reflected in the work of some of the country’s greatest artists. These camps are not just art classes or art appreciation workshops, they are vibrant, well-led programs allowing kids to have fun while interacting with others around the arts.

  • October 06, 2019The Woods Are Burning
McMichael Children and Youth Art Camps and Programs, 10365 Islington Avenue, Kleinburg, Ontario
Join us Sunday, October 06 from 04:00 pm - 06:30 pm

In The Woods Are Burning, novelist and poet Anne Michaels and singer-songwriter David Sereda lead a stellar ensemble to celebrate the life, art and passion of Tom Thomson.

Over a century ago, Thomson’s painting and spirit galvanized his fellow Canadian artists, many of whom would later become the Group of Seven. Thomson, the Group of Seven and their contemporaries would change the way we see our country.

The Woods are Burning follows Thomson’s journey his childhood singing in the church choir, wandering the woods and fishing in the bay, to his years in Toronto with the friends who would become the Group of Seven, and north to Algonquin Park, where he finds his true calling as an artist. The intricate weaving of spoken word and songs will show audiences a side of Thomson rarely discussed: joyous, yearning, restless, humble, light-hearted and very aware of his own mortality.

Above all, The Woods Are Burning strives to interpret and understand the passion which drove Thomson to create paintings that continue to captivate audiences around the world.

    RSVP required.
