Session: Online July Math Camps (University of Toronto, Department of Mathematics)

About this Program:

Students will join us virtually over Zoom for a week-long online camp. Throughout the week, students will explore various mathematical topics in a fun and interactive way. Each group has a different focus.

Grade 3/4 Online Summer Math Camp: Math in Nature

In this camp, we will delve into how mathematics can help us understand the natural world and its inhabitants. We will explore fascinating examples, such as the Fibonacci sequence in pinecone spirals and the hexagonal patterns in honeycombs, to uncover the mathematical principles that surround us. Throughout the week, we will cover key concepts including fractions, algebra, geometry, probability, and other mathematical phenomena found in nature. We will also dive into multiplication and division, decimals and fractions, data management, and advanced geometry.

Grade 5/6 Online Summer Math Camp: Math in Coding and Video Games - Scratch

Step into the shoes of game developers! In this camp, you will learn about the key elements of popular video games, what makes a game great, and how to implement these features in Scratch. Through the process of game development, students will create their own unique games in Scratch while learning core coding concepts along the way!

Note: This is an introductory camp. If you have a coding background, you may consider joining the Gr 3/4, 6/7 or 7/8 enrichment camps.

Grade 6/7 Online Summer Math Camp: Introduction to Euclidean Geometry and Proofs

In this camp, students will be introduced to geometry as once formulated by the famous mathematician, Euclid. We shall survey his axioms, postulates, and theorems, and shall learn how to write proofs. Throughout the week, we shall learn how to develop geometric intuition for lines, angles, and triangles.

Grade 7/8 Online Summer Math Camp: Number Theory and Its Applications

Numbers and math are all around us waiting to be discovered. In this camp, students will discover the different types of math codes including binary, morse, cryptography, a bit of Scratch programming, and even braille. We will cover topics related to number theory, algebra, patterning and trigonometry.

Grade 9/10 Online Summer Math Camp: Infinity, Fractals, and the Paradoxes

In this camp, students will explore paradoxes, infinite sets, and fractals. Students will investigate Hilbert’s Hotel, Cantor’s diagonal argument, and the visual beauty of chaos through fractals. They will also explore the vastness and differing sizes of infinities. By connecting logic and patterns, they’ll gain insight into the surprising structure of advanced mathematical ideas.
