PreMedSKL Summer - Neurology

PreMedSKL is a virtual mentorship program for high school students founded by internationally renowned physician Dr. Sanjay Sharma. Every two weeks, students participate in immersive half-day sessions where they work through real clinical cases using the SOAP framework (Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan) to develop structured diagnostic reasoning skills.

In the neurology module, students explore how doctors diagnose and manage disorders of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves — from strokes and epilepsy to conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and Myasthenia Gravis. They examine the Circle of Willis to understand how aneurysms form and study how signals travel across the neuromuscular junction to control movement. Using case-based learning and virtual patient simulations, students are exposed to systems to evaluate symptoms such as numbness, weakness, and memory loss, recognize neurological “red flags,” and understand why rapid intervention is critical in emergencies like acute paralysis. Through guided cranial nerve exams and headache triage scenarios, students are introduced to the complex neuroanatomy and clinical judgment that is utilized in real neurological practice.
