AREA & ACTIVITIES

The program will run from 9:00am-5:00pm each day (Monday to Friday), starting at the Evergreen Brickworks, and is accessible by car, public transportation, on foot or by bike. Each week will feature an optional overnight on Thursday evening as your introduction to campcraft!

Week 1 (July 3-7):

Develop your hiking skills in the Don Valley at the Evergreen Brickworks and at the Rouge National Urban Park: home to amazing biodiversity and Canada’s only Urban National Park! Learn how to pack your backpack, select the essentials of hiking gear and build your physical and mental fitness as you explore the city on foot.

Week 2 (July 10-14):

Focus on your flatwater canoeing skills on Lake Ontario, exploring Ashbridges Bay, the Humber and Rouge Rivers and Toronto’s harbourfront and iconic Toronto Islands: a chain of 15 islands with a picturesque view of the city skyline. Gain a solid introduction or continue building your paddling skills, strokes, and expand your understanding of canoe gear and techniques. Enjoy a view of the dynamic metropolis from the water – a whole new perspective!

Week 3 (July 17-21):

Explore new heights while learning to climb: high ropes and rock climbing, enjoying areas of the Evergreen Brick Works, indoor climbing facilities, and Rattlesnake Point on the Niagara Escarpment. Discover and build your physical and mental skills for climbing, familiarize yourself with the equipment and learn top-rope safety and techniques with new peers in beautiful urban wilderness settings!

Character Development: This program helps build the following traits

  • Resilience: Participants will step out of the comfort of daily routines and into an adventurous and exciting, yet foreign and uncertain environment. Using the course's challenges, instructors will teach participants how to transfer the skills they learned to their everyday lives.
  • Interpersonal skills: Participants will create a strong sense of community with their peers as they travel through the wilderness, learning how to work together to accomplish daily tasks and make decisions.
