The Our Kids review of Easter Seal Summer Camp

    our take

A really special camp, the Easter Seal Summer Camp is a camp for children, youth, and adults with disabilities. This isn’t just a camp offering accommodations—the camp is specifically tailored for those who have cognitive and physical challenges. Campers enjoy a wide variety of activities and don’t miss out on anything based on their abilities. The entire facility is fully accessible by everyone, so no one is ever left out of anything. Each week boasts a new theme, so campers are always engaged, no matter how many weeks they attend. What’s really unique about this camp is that they make a huge effort to make new campers very comfortable. Many of these new campers have never been away from home, so it is a welcome break for campers and their caregivers. Campers get to try new things and meet new people. The staff here are phenomenal and they really love what they do. They make every effort to ensure campers never hear the word no and that they are supported in everything they do.

Nansey - mom to camper Tina (Parent)The Life Changing Magic of Camp

I don’t have enough words to describe how grateful I am for Easter Seals. Tina arrives at camp and she holds court. All the counsellors and leaders and other participants remember her. It’s just like coming home. It’s such a beautiful thing. She spends a week there and it is absolutely the highlight of her year. She talks about it for months beforehand, and months afterwards. She just gets to celebrate life and enjoy it, it’s irreplaceable. The quality of the care, the compassion and kindness of the staff is absolutely incredible. Every year they select and hire the most competent capable, dedicated, enthusiastic, creative, energetic, bubbly personalities. I mean it’s just incredible. It’s such a safe, trusted space to come into. As soon as you enter the property, the energy that they have, you feel it right away, you feel welcome. You instinctively know that everybody is going to have a wonderful time. ... Read More

Lana, mom to camper Lydia (Parent)12 Years of Camp and Counting!

Easter Seals Summer camp is Lydia’s most anticipated activity of the year. From the day after one summer camp ends, she can’t wait for the next year’s camp dates announcements, registration dates, registration procedures and then the final anticipation of the drive to Camp Shawnigan. Lydia’s attendance at summer camp enables her to have a ‘regular’ summer camp experience. She has met so many lifelong friends and peers by attending, peers outside her regular day to day community. It also provides her family a week of respite, a week we feel good about because we know she is having the time of her life. She is either performing in the Talent show, out in a sailboat, swimming in the pool or lake, making crafts, swinging on the big swing or tye-dying a new shirt for her collection. It gives us time to recharge. Lydia tries to challenge herself each year by trying something new at each summer camp she attends. She has tried to step outside her comfort zone. She must be more independent and learn to speak up for herself while away at camp and not with those of us that know her needs automatically. She has been able to trust that her time away will be safe and fun. ... Read More

Barb, Camper Dillon's mom (Parent)Camp Possibilities

“At camp, they don’t hear the word no, which is what they hear a lot of when navigating the world around them. Here they can try any activity because it’s set up to be fully accessible and the staff are trained to work with all abilities and needs. And if a camper is nervous to try something, there is such a supportive environment to make them feel safe.” ... Read More

    Carly (Camper)28 Year Camper

I am so excited to be attending Camp Shawnigan again this year, I have already registered! I have been going to Easter Seals Camps since I was 6 years old and I’m now 34 ... that’s a LONG time! For me, the best part about Camp is making new friends and seeing my old ones. I love going on the big swing, doing arts and crafts (especially tie dying) and Kangaroo Court! ... Read More

Adam (Camper)Camp is an Accepting Place

Camp Shawnigan is a place I can call home away from home. I get to see so many friends and spend a week just having fun, doing activities with no electronics and getting to meet new people are some of the things I love about camp. We all get to be ourselves and know that we are in a place that we all can feel accepted. We are grateful to have a place like Camp Shawnigan! ... Read More

    Director's Message

James Gagnon, Director, Camp Programs and Facilities Easter Seals BC/Yukon

    Dear Prospective Camp Families,

As we prepare to enter our 54th year of offering Easter Seals summer camps I’ve been reflecting on what creates the “magic” of camp. There’s something bigger than all of us at camp, you feel it when you come through the gates, there’s a magic in the air.

Maybe it’s the echoes of a history rich in laughter, fun, community and most importantly acceptance, no, celebration of who each individual is in any moment. Over my years I’ve seen staff arrive wondering how they can impact the lives of each camper and leave changed forever from the experience, not only of loving and caring for individuals as they are, but from BEING loved and cared for exactly as they are.

Campers and families, understandably arrive at camp with some anxiety and trepidation. No one can predict what is involved or how things will turn out in any new situation. Now add to that a disability and a camper who may have never been away from their primary caretaker, and that uncertainty is intensified.

Then the magic happens. A combination of training, experience, love, fun, friendship, independence and so many ingredients I haven’t even figured out turns one week of camp into the best time of our campers’ lives. Rarely do we see a camper just once. We have many campers who have grown up at camp and continue to join through adulthood. Speaking to campers many will quickly tell you they look forward to camp all year. Checking to see when registration opens daily, to counting down to the big day. This is our Disneyland. It's magical, safe, fun, welcoming and behind the scenes strings are being pulled night and day to make sure each one of our campers creates lifelong memories.

At camp campers and staff will:

    • Gain confidence, independence, and responsibility and CELEBRATE WHO THEY ARE.
    • Have opportunities to challenge themselves, take risks and try new things in a safe, warm and supportive environment
    • Become active members of a community that embraces the beauty and diversity of self, others and the environment.
    • Have opportunities to cultivate meaningful friendships and experiences that contribute to their personal growth and development.
    • HAVE FUN!

Please reach out to me if you have any questions. Myself and our Assistant Camp Director, Dale Kilgour, are here to make sure you feel confident sending your family member to camp.

    James Gagnon,

Director, Camp Programs and Facilities Easter Seals BC/Yukon
