  • Insider Reviews & Perspectives

The Our Kids review of Camp Celtic

    our take

Family-run since 1984, the program at Camp Celtic has been delightfully traditional and consistent ever since. Skills are important, though relationships and care are too, something that the camp rightly prides itself on offering. The site is vast, set on 200 acres with access to Lake Huron, and supports delivery of all the traditional camp activities and then some. Leadership programs extend the theme as well as the season, with four-day leadership training session offered in the spring and fall.

    Director's Message

    Tim Matheson, Owner/Director

A cup of adventure, a dash of excitement, a bushel of fun, a heaping portion of being outdoors, a pinch of apprehension … this could be part of the recipe that has made camp great for such a long time!

I don’t know the exact proportions for this recipe, (and probably the mixture is different for every Camper who attends Celtic), but I do know the ingredient list by heart. Along with the above, it includes caring, sharing, awareness, learning, growth, compassion, being away from home, singing, laughter, and sometimes…silence.

Camp has long been a place where fun and fellowship abound, and where campers learn about themselves and the natural world. It has withstood the test of time.

Who knew that Camp would become even more relevant as we move forward into the 2nd generation of our family’s Directorship of Celtic? It is now apparent that Celtic provides campers a respite from too much technology, not enough fresh air. Celtic is a place where we see the stars at night, the sun rise in the morning, and where we remember what it is to run and swim and play. As a parent, I find these are the things that I wish for my child.

Our promise then remains…To provide Celtic campers with the very best camp experience possible.

    Stories

    • Celtic Friends and Family

Camp Celtic is the best thing I ever did for my girls, their weeks there for several years gave them the love of outdoors, making friends that 1 is still in contact with several of them still to this day. I believe the Celtic experience is what lead my 1 daughter in their chosen career path of Recreation and Leisure, never having to grow up! The songs they learned and remember pop up every once an a while to. They both love to visit the Bruce Peninsula when they can visiting the locations camp took them to. Thank you to Lumpy, Hainey and staff for the wonderful experience you provided to both my girls and one day hope my grandkids will attend Celtic!

    • Rookie Camp

My girls went to the Rookie Camp and loved every minute...the staff was amazing and my girls counsellors were stellar. Will definitely be sending them next summer!

    • Batman Game

A Celtic campfire was interrupted in August by, of all things, a press conference. Commissioner Gordan of Gotham City was forced to leave a city benefit dinner early to deliver ill news to the Press and the citizens of Gotham. The Joker and his band of misfit criminals had infiltrated the Fireworks Factory. They had started the manufacture of a mind altering toxin - enough to affect the entire city. As the crowd of citizens watched, the Gotham City Police stormed the Fireworks Factory. The silence of the night was sharply cut by the laughter and screams of Joker, Riddler, Two Face, Dr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Penguin, and Scarecrow. The Police were repelled from the building by the smoke and abrupt flashes of light from the exploding fireworks. Commissioner Gordon, facing the destruction of his City, made his last available desperate decision. He chose to call for help. High above the commotion the Bat sign, a beacon of hope, could be seen. Like a wave, amidst the "oohs" and "aahs" of the crowd, one could hear whispers of "It's Batman". The following day, with the assistance of Batman and Robin, the Gotham City Police were able to restore order to the city and capture the Joker and other criminals.

    • Is it Summer Yet?

"I wanted to tell you how much fun I had! I have to say that it was the best 7 days of my life. I wish I was still there. It was so fun! I cant wait to come back next year. I think I am going to go for two weeks."

    • School Trips

"Once again, I enjoyed the weekend just as much as the students. You have truly created something very special and that is a reflection of the people that you both are. Your obvious love of children is clearly evident in all that you say and do at camp. As both a teacher, and as a parent, I thank you for giving myself, my students and my daughter such a memory."

    • First Time Camper
As a parent, one is nervous about sending their child to camp, especially the first time. John was determined to go to camp with no friends because he wanted to meet new people and try new adventures. To have a child expand their horizons in a positive environment is what every parent hopes for and thanks to you, it happened for John at Camp Celtic. I can't thank you enough and you will definately see us again.
