To provide a diverse learning experience, the Canadian Mathematical Society is offering two distinct weeks of math camp. Week two focuses on the building blocks of math and technology, where students explore numbers and shapes through algebra, patterns, and geometry. This year, we have enhanced our curriculum to include coding logic, allowing campers to use sequences and debugging to solve problems and understand mathematical concepts in a whole new way.

As the national voice of mathematics in Canada, the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) has been offering engaging camps all across Canada for decades. The goal of the CMS, a non-profit organization, is to promote and advance the discovery, learning and application of mathematics.

We wish to create an environment for children to develop a passion for mathematics through exciting mathematical challenges with positive role models while building new friendships. This camp curriculum was exclusively created by the Canadian Mathematical Society. This camp is open for anyone who wishes to attend!

There will be 4 groups available:

Build-It-Math: Shapes, Towers and Tiny Code - Ages 6-7 (2 classes available)

Each day begins with engaging math stories and logic puzzles that spark curiosity and set the stage for deep discussion. This high-energy class invites students to explore math through games, building, and creative play. Participants will strengthen their skills in patterns and number relationships and geometry by uncovering number patterns, investigating shapes in nature, and constructing 3D structures. To expand their problem-solving toolkit, students will use coding logic to deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts, learning to alter and debug code to ensure it generates the expected outcome. We will explore how changing a sequence of instructions can sometimes produce the same result and sometimes produce a different outcome entirely, like in subtraction or directional code. By predicting outcomes and visualizing movement in space, students will master the art of debugging. Each day concludes with our camp favorite: high-energy competition questions where teamwork and quick thinking take center stage!

Geometry Engineers: Builds, Patterns & Code - Ages 8-9

Each day kicks off with logic paradoxes and math-based mysteries that challenge students to think critically and debate their solutions. This high-energy class moves beyond basic play into strategic and competitive problem-solving.

Participants will sharpen algebraic thinking and advanced geometry by analyzing growth patterns, calculating the properties of symmetry and tessellation, and engineering 3D structures. To expand their toolkit, students will dive into algorithmic logic, learning not just to debug code, but to make the code shorter/clearer using loops. We will investigate the power of conditional logic (choice points/different pathways) and loops, exploring how the order of operations—much like in multi-step equations—can create elegant solutions or unexpected glitches.

By mastering spatial visualization and predictive modeling, students will become expert “code-breakers.” Each day concludes with our competition-style challenges.

Math Hackers: Equations Shapes and Smart Code (Ages 10-11)

This class is for students ready to take their math skills to the next level. If you want to tackle complex challenges while having fun, this is the class for you! We emphasize strategic problem-solving that will push your thinking and sharpen your logic.

Discover the hidden relationships between numbers and master the building blocks of algebra and logic. Students will solve sophisticated equations through fun challenges and “math hacks.” To expand our toolkit, we will introduce coding logic, exploring how variables and sequences allow us to automate patterns and solve problems faster. Explore the properties of 2D and 3D shapes by diving into architecture and structural engineering. Through hands-on building projects, we will calculate area and perimeter to create stable structures. We will introduce coding logic to help us automate patterns, exploring how variables and input-output work in both math and programming to solve problems more efficiently.

Explore how math is used in technology by studying algorithms – the step-by-step instructions that power our world. Using manipulatives and puzzles, students will learn to “debug” complex sequences. We will explore how changing a single instruction can produce the same result or a different outcome entirely, teaching students to visualize the logic behind every move before they make it. Each day concludes with a camp favorite: our high-stakes competition questions where teamwork and quick thinking take center stage!
