    COVID-19 Response

The Camp Oconto Team is busy planning for in-person camp in summer 2021! Kids have never needed camp more and we are making every effort to realize a safe and happy camp experience for your daughters. Here are 3 important points to be aware of: 1. The Oconto Team is working closely with a number of organizations to develop our 2021 plan. This includes:  · private boarding schools in Ontario;  · American summer camps that operated in 2020;   · our local public health unit; and, · the Ontario Camps Association (OCA), with whom one of Oconto's Directors, Bronwyn Gorsline, is an active member of the COVID-19 overnight camps committee 2. Because of the pandemic, camp in 2021 is unlikely to look identical to camp in 2019. However, with the help and support of the amazing Oconto community of staff and campers, we will adapt treasured traditions and activities to the current reality. 3. Here are some key factors that are working in favour of overnight camps being able to run safely in summer 2021. Firstly, Oconto campers spend the vast majority of their time outdoors. Many activities that traditionally happen indoors can be moved outside. Secondly, Camp Oconto is situated on 80 acres of land. There is lots of space to spread out. Thirdly, Oconto's age group sections can function as cohorts. Finally, Oconto has well-trained, creative and adaptable staff.

The Our Kids review of Camp Oconto

    our take

Oconto is one of the great girls’ camps in the country, with a long history of consistent leadership. Founded in 1924, Lisa and Bruce Wilson have directed the camp since 1982, taking over from Lisa’s parents, who purchased Oconto in 1949. Lisa arrived for her first camp season at three months of age, and she has been back every year since. She’s been a leader in the camping world for decades, having served as president of the Society of Camp Directors, and as member of the board of the Ontario Camps Association. In all, there’s an impressive pedigree here, one that is still evident throughout the camp, from the architecture—the main hall, for one, has been in continual use since 1924—to the values that are promoted through the programming. The sense of tradition is palpable and animates the Oconto experience; girls who have attended feel that they are part of a family, one that is shared with the campers who went before. The activities are varied, though it’s the experience of the culture of the camp that campers typically treasure the most.

15 years of joy and growth at Camp Oconto!
    Camp Oconto Alumna (Camp alumni)

15 years of camp and 20 years later as a mom and teachers assistant I am still pulling tricks from my "tickle-trunk" that I learned at Camp Oconto. My years spent at camp have been the best pre-requisite for being a parent. In the words of June Labbett, "if it's not fun, forget it." -Oconto Alumna (Years at Camp Oconto: 1986 - 2001) ... Safe, positive and inclusive environment...
Parent of 2 Oconto girls (Parent)

Camp Oconto has given my two daughters experiences that reach far beyond the month they spend there. The safe, positive and inclusive environment at Oconto fosters confidence in both social skills and life skills. My girls often reflect upon times at camp and relate them to what is happening in their non-camp life--school, sports teams and inter-personal relationships. I cannot thank Camp Oconto enough for the good times they've had at camp and the life dividends it's paid. My eldest daughter still talks about the "friendship" roll she did in Kayaking! And watching my youngest daughter jump off High-Tower on visitors day--smile on her face--brought a smile to my face. Thank you Oconto for giving my children a lifetime of memories, friendships and confidence. ... Read More

Bronwyn and Ted Gorsline, Camp Directors

Oconto is a place to be yourself!  What permission for a young girl in today's world.

Character building programs will challenge and inspire campers to be strong, optimistic, and kind. Camp Oconto is a place to belong and to feel encouraged. Learn to live a balanced life. Trust yourself and others. You will also learn that it is great to succeed but equally important to sometimes fail. Learn to get up and try again.

    • A school assignment.
Something that is very important to me is camp. I go to Camp Oconto. At camp you can do whatever you like, be who-ever you are, and dress however you like, and no one will care. And one of the most important parts of camp is friends. Some good friends I have made at camp are Gabriella, Ashley, Natasha, Kara and many others. All the best people are important. At camp without them, it is quite a different atmosphere. When I left camp I really did NOT want to leave all of my friends, memories, activities, counsellors, food, songs and everything else. Next year I'll go for a month.
    • Oconto
Well, first of all two weeks goes by way too fast! I had an amazing time once again! Thanks for making Oconto so awesome! I made a ton of new friends, the food was great, and I managed to try every activity. I'll see you next year! I hope the rest of your summer is a blast. Kristi.
    • What Oconto really does
Oconto is a traditional camp. There are many activities. There are lots of girls wanting to play, be outside, and be themselves. No boys, just be yourself. Wake up and there will be three or four friends. "There are no strangers here, only friends you haven't met yet" You will learn about friends, and girls that will not be your best friends, but you will learn how to get along with them anyway, you will learn to be away from your family and gain confidence, you will try to achieve goals you set for yourself, you will not watch t.v., and you will learn to entertain yourself with the simple things. To laugh, to listen to understand and to have fun. Join us at Oconto. A place where you can be yourself!
