Who are you as an organization?

Established in 1920. Chikopi was voted one of Canada’s 7 Best Summer Camps for boys. For over 100 years Chikopi continues the tradition of teamwork: building friendship, leadership, self-confidence and character through sports. Chikopi is a modest, family orientated rustic summer camp. Chikopi is the #1 choice for boys who enjoy the outdoors & a wide variety of sports. Boys attend for all over the world, third and fourth generations of campers come back year after year. What do you do differently or uniquely well?

"Being a small camp ensures everyone knows your name within days. Our program is fully sports orientated. A mix of assigned and u-pick activities provides a well-rounded experience. We have small classes ensuring one-on-one instruction. Free specialized classes are available in swimming, soccer, tennis, and sailing. There are once a summer weekly special competitive events. Meals are served family style, helping boys master the art of communicating and socializing. The boys live in 12-14 person cabins where they gain the unique ability of coping skills. Counselors reside in the cabins as chaperones. Chikopi is non-denominational, cabins take turns each week reflecting and explaining their understanding of the Golden Rule."

Who are your staff and counsellors?

"Chikopi counselors are hand-picked by the Directors, they are chosen for their leadership and positive role-model qualities. All counselors and staff are interviewed and undergo a thorough background check. Almost every counselor was a Chikopi camper, thus ensuring continuity of over 100 years of traditions. Counselors and staff participate in weeks of training before the campers arrive. Counselors are required to be First Aid Certified and the majority are Lifeguard certified."

What do families need to know about registration?

"Registration is ongoing. Enrollment is simple: contact the office to ask for a registration form or download it from our web site. Complete the Chikopi registration form and return it to the office. Each registration requires a $500 non-refundable deposit. Discounts are available for siblings. Cabin requests can be accommodated when the campers are within 18 months of each others age."

The Our Kids review of Camp Chikopi

    our take

Celebrating its centenary in 2020, Camp Chikopi has a long and very unique history. It was founded as a sports camp at a time when such a thing simply didn’t exist. It was founded by a US Olympic coach, Matt Mann, and the approach that he brought, as well as the level of coaching experience, remains to this day. Directorship of the camp has remained essentially in the family, if with a few twists and turns along the way, and leadership has been strikingly consistent, particularly in upholding the founding values of challenge, community, teamwork, and adventure. Campers arrive to an environment that is dedicated to personal achievement, physical activity, and excellence. Facilities are excellent, with all the appropriate updates while being sympathetic to the traditions and the history of the site.

It was his first experience away from home, which was tough on our part to gently let him go for that long and far out. Victor is continuing to tell us stories about his time at Chikopi. So many new things that he's learned, especially how to RIDE A BIKE, try tabasco sauce, and so many new skills! Tue, Sep 10, 2019 12:07 am Francisco Dear Collete, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for the fantastic summer camp experience. Francisco enjoyed it very much and continues to share his experiences with us. Best regards, Francisco Sat, Sep 7, 2019 5:49 am Dear Colette, Thank you so much! I've been wanting to email you a huge thank you for the amazing summer for Tayuto and Hyuga. Tayuto has been telling me about his summer in bits and pieces. He said that you were the main reason why the camp is so special -- according to Tayuto you are strict but quite funny and a very nice person with a warm heart (high praise coming from a 14-year-old boy!) What I've gathered is that he loved that everyone was embraced and affirmed for who they really are, warts and all. He keeps saying, "Everyone is so nice at Camp Chikopi." It is now the gold standard by which he compares the world. Of course, nothing comes close to Camp Chikopi so he is often disappointed, but I think it makes him appreciate the camp all the more. And, Camp Chikopi is special also because I think he felt like he could be his best self while he was there. Having Tayuto and Hyuga attend the camp was absolutely the right decision!! Both Tayuto and Hyuga want to return next summer, and we will do our best to work out their schedules so they can both attend for 4 weeks. With appreciation, Ann Fri, Sep 6, 2019 11:46 am Thank you. Isaac had an amazing time!! Wed, Sep 4, 2019 5:21 pm Dear Colette, Good to hear from you! Francisco had an amazing time with you, he could have stayed the entire summer. Thank you and I will get in touch with you. Best, Adriana. Wed, Sep 4, 2019 1:22 pm Dear Colette, Thanks so much for your email and for your kind words. We are super excited about getting the 2020 Enrollment package as there is not a single day that passes by when they don't talk about Chikopi. We also see a new level of maturity, thoughtfulness and physical strength that you managed to cultivate in the two weeks they were in your care. Wishing you a great Fall! Irina Wed, Sep 4, 2019 11:23 am Hello, I was going to email you to let you know that Indiana felt that camp was the best summer of all his 5 years. He felt the staff was really positive and supportive. He absolutely loved Bob's sister's talk. I had 4 of your Chikopi boys over and they all stated that Bob Day was wonderful. Jennifer Wed, Sep 4, 2019 10:19 am Hi Colette, Ethan had a wonderful time at Camp Chikopi and had nothing but great things to say about the counsellors, coaches, staff and the friends he made during his three week stay. We are amazed at how much his swimming and wrestling skills have improved as well as his overall sense of responsibility. Thank you for making camp such a positive and rewarding experience for him. Kind regards, Nina P.S.: Ethan also mentioned the passing of your husband Bob and what an emotional tribute you had for him. My sincere condolences to you and your daughter. Based on Ethan's comments, it was obvious that Bob had a huge impact on those around him and deeply loved. Tue, Sep 3, 2019 10:14 pm Great. Thanks! Cooper had a wonderful time at camp and plan to sign up again next year! Looking forward to next summer! Thanks! Soo Tue, Sep 3, 2019 5:37 pm Hi Colette He had an absolutely fabulous time and he can’t wait to come back next year. Thanks again for having Thomas over and now he needs to settle down and concentrate on his studies. Take care. Graham Sharon and the kids xxx Tue, Sep 3, 2019 5:36 pm Dear Colette: Thanks for your words about Javi. Again he enjoyed a lot this summer and learned many things. He will be happy to come back as Counselor next year. We wish you and your family the best for the rest of the year. Mon, Sep 2, 2019 3:33 pm Hi Colette: I hope this season was a success on your way to 100! Everything went smoothly Daniel came back relaxed, fit, and happy! Thank you once again for providing a safe, fun, healthy environment at the highest level. These experiences are formative, and will remain with him for life. This time around, Daniel also made a few new friends, with whom he is actively corresponding! Daniel is already planning next summer, although, in keeping with family tradition, I may encourage him to get a summer job… He wants to come to Chikopi for SEVEN weeks… Hope all is well with you. Safe return to Florida, and have a great year. Thanks again, Colette, for everything!!! You’re like a second mom! Best wishes, Eric Mon, Sep 2, 2019 3:16 am Dear Colette, Mathis spent very good time with you at Chikopi and he will keep great memories of his 2 weeks Regards Mathilde Thu, Aug 29, 2019 3:03 pm Hi Colette! Thank you so much - the boys had a wonderful time and I had a great time (always too short). One of the really interesting things is how much more cooperative they are around each other back at home. I guess they realize they have more in common than they think. Thu, Aug 29, 2019 2:49 pm Thank you Colette, Those are great news!!! Kamil was very happy, thank you for everything, hope to send him again next year! Regards, Carmen Thu, Aug 29, 2019 12:57 pm Thank you, Colette! Debbie Tue, Aug 20, 2019 10:12 am Hi Colette, We would like to thank you and all the staff! This was Tim's first time at Chikopi and we got him back all happy, strong, very organized and so grown up! He said he had fantastic time, learned so many interesting things, got new friends and definitely wants to go back next year, 3 weeks surely this time! Lots of thanks and very best regards from your family to yours! Katsia Chaikouskaya Mon, Aug 19, 2019 6:21 pm Hi Colette and Teagan, Well Thomas had an absolute ball, extremely chuffed with all his awards and merits he achieved. He of course brought home some quality stories, I think that is part of the Camp Tradition, all of them very funny. He met a lot of awesome people they all sound fantastic!!! Overall he had an absolute ball and sounds like he was spoiled daft. I have to make some sort of peanut butter millionaire shortbread, I’m sure that is not slimming world approved. He is straight back into football and they all return to school on Wednesday. Sharon, Graham, Thomas. Mon, Aug 19, 2019 10:16 am Hi Colette- Geoffrey is still talking about how much he loved camp, Christie Thu, Aug 15, 2019 8:04 am Dear Colette, Another season is over and Alexander is safely back in the UK, looking happy and healthy. Was such a joy to see our grown up son back. Thank you so much! It is a lot of work looking after the boys of all ages and characters and our hat is off to You and all the Counsellors! Hope you have fantastic rest of the summer and we might meet you next year. Thinking of going on holiday to Canada in 2020 and picking up Alexander ourselves. Fingers crossed the plan will work. Warmest wishes Mark and Anastasia Thu, Aug 15, 2019 2:32 am Hi Colette -- I wanted to write to extend a big thank you to you and everyone at Chikopi for taking such great care of my son during his three-week stay. Kai came back fairly exhausted but he has been opening up more and more about his experiences. He certainly has a lot to process but I can tell from the huge smile on his face that he has many fond memories of his time at camp and that he made some amazing new friends. My hope in sending Kai to camp was that he would be able to experience what a summer holiday in Canada is all about. To that extent, I feel his time at Chikopi was a massive success. He definitely has a better understanding of Canada, the outdoors and of all the teachings he has been able to take away from his brief time at Chikopi. So, again, thank you so much and best wishes. Iain Wilson Tue, Aug 13, 2019 3:24 pm Colette, Jesus is having, a great summer we miss him so much but Chikopi is very good for him, he cares for you and your daughter a lot, he told me about Bob´s memorial that it was very beautiful and emotional. If you ever come to Queretaro please call us. Thanks for everything. Jesus Torre Tue, Aug 13, 2019 3:05 pm Hi Colette, We LOVE looking at the pictures. Looks like all the boys always have such a big smile. You are making magic up there! A thousand thank yous! Tue, 11 Oct 2022 14:24 Thank you Collette. I have seen the impact of camp in him already. He has been consistently dropping 5 to 6 minutes in every cross country race this fall. Kameron loved his time at Chikopi this past summer and can't wait to go back. His two younger brothers are excited to give it a try next summer as well! He talked all the way home about the fun parts of camp, and particularly liked the chants and songs. I studied neuroanatomy in uni and am very aware that boys learn better in boy environments, so thank you for providing this opportunity for his growth and wellbeing :) Hopefully you will accept Ronin back next year. Thanks for giving so many boys this wonderful opportunity, Laura Nash Sun, 14 Aug 2022 16:16 Hi Colette, I had not been able to write to thank you for the camp, Sebastián and Emiliano returned well and very happy. Sebastián learned new and better habits, he came back with a more serene personality, motivated with the exercise, food and happy to be able to return next year. There are already several friends who have been infected by his experience and first of all God willing next year will not only be Sebastian but many more children who can live the experience. Once again, on behalf of my family, Susy, Sebastián, José Daniel and I, we want to thank you for taking care of our son and giving him this beautiful experience. I am pending the new camp, do not forget to notify us of the dates. Receive a big hug and we are pending. Daniel Fri, 12 Aug 2022 13:43 Colette: I just want to thank you for this great summer. He arrived save home. And returned taller and eating a lot hahaha. Hope he keeps the habit of the exercise back there. And to keep clean his room. I will be grateful if you tell me tips to motivate him to continue all those good conducts. Thank you again, wishing you to end successfully all the summer camp season. Dear Families,

Thank you for your interest in Camp Chikopi, let us tell you a little more about Chikopi and after you have finished reading if you would like further information please check out our web site or request our ebrochure, we will be very happy to answer your questions or put you in contact with some of our alumni.

Chikopi began in 1920, we are a small traditional sports camp, with the honour of being the World’s first “All Sports Summer Camp”. We offer boys a variety of traditional sports with a wilderness camp experience. Our 400 acres sit on a beautiful waterfront location in the heart of the Almaguin Highlands, Ontario, Canada.  Making Chikopi ideal for both land and water sports, in addition to the large variety of traditional sports we also specialize in soccer and swimming.

At Chikopi, we live in, age assigned, rustic wood cabins creating a close community of friendship and adventure. Our campers discover the rewards of being in a spectacular natural setting without technology’s distractions. They thrive on the Chikopi traditions of teamwork and leadership.

Our highly trained staff of counselors and instructors provide the crucial 3:1 ratio that ensures individual attention for every boy. Many of our Staff have developed through our camper ranks to counselor and staff, they were chosen for their skills and personality, to guide and encourage the next generation.

Chikopi can accommodate 70 campers, aged 7-17. In 2022, we represented over 12 nations including USA and Canada.

Sessions are 2, 3, 4, 5 or 7 weeks long. Transport is available on scheduled session dates. We take canoe trips, in our trademark green and white cedar strip canoes, on a cruise through the 3,000 square miles of Algonquin Provincial Park and other lakes and rivers in the region.

Some of our camp activities include, Soccer, Tennis, Volleyball, Softball, Basketball, Cricket, Golf, Archery, Lacrosse, Mountain Biking, Swimming, Kayaking, and Sailing.

Chikopi is Accredited by the Ontario Camping Association.

    • Great Experience
I talked with Javier yesterday and he is having a wonderful time as every other year. I want to tell you we love Javier to go to Chikopi every summer, because it's been a great experience for him in all aspects. Thank your for being part of that. We really appreciate everything you do for the kids to have a good time and learn a lot of each other at the camp. Best wishes, Teresa
    • Chikopi Family
Colette and Bob, Just wanted to say thank you for another great year at Chikopi. Alex came home with lots of stories of his experiences and, as usual, he has grown while away. When we send Alex to Chikopi, I feel like he is going to see family. It has been the greatest experience for him. Thank you for another year of memories. Connie and Cheryl
    • Great Summer
Hi, Deb here, Zach's Mom. Just wanted to THANK YOU for another great summer. We have heard so many funny stories about Zach's summer. We were thankful as well that he was NOT hanging out here in Fairfield, Connecticut with the rest of his friends who were very bored and seemed to get in a bit of trouble. Zach has made the CREW team at his new Prep school and is really loving it. He really is turning into a fine young man.

    • Fun
Thank you for providing our son with such a wonderful experience. Enjoy the rest of your summer. Denise
    • Big Brother
Chikopi is truly a wonderful place. Bob and Colette become parents for all boys for the summer. ... Colette inspects their cabins every morning to make sure that the beds are made and clutters are removed from the floor (too bad this is only for the summer!). All counselors are hand-picked by Bob and Colette. They are caring, responsible big brothers, and make sure that the campers are safe and having fun at all times. Campers come from many different countries: Canada, U.S., Mexico, France, Venezuela, England, Germany, etc. On the day they arrive, they immediately become Chikopi brothers and start caring for each other. All campers look up to Bob and the counselors as role models -- it is so cute to see young campers flocking around big guys.... Mio
