The Forerunner program is designed for candidates who are 14 years of age by the upcoming camping season (priority given to those born before Jan) During their month at camp, Forerunners will take part in daily leadership challenges as they are guided through the selection of skill based programs while they work towards their Merit award (when a camper achieves the highest awards in four different disciplines at camp) as well as their Bronze Medallion swimming level. In addition, their group they will plan and implement a 5-day overnight in Algonquin Park. Leading up to this push trip, candidates will be busy as they craft their own paddle in the wood working studio. A 2-week program option is also available, where campers will be challenged in all aspects of the program, however will have fewer instruction days and will not take part in the 5 day canoe trip.
The program is an option for kids who are 14 as of January 1st of the camping year. While it is great preparation for the LIT program, it is not required in order to take part in LIT at 15.
Character Development: This program helps build the following traits
Interpersonal skills: Forerunners work together, live together and begin to build a deep relationship with their peers as they work hard to achieve success in this program.
Self-regulation: In this first year of leadership, independence comes at the cost of self regulation. Candidates begin to understand how their behaviour effects others.
