This course introduces the mathematical concept of the function by extending students’ experiences with linear and quadratic relations. Students will investigate properties of discrete and continuous functions, including trigonometric and exponential functions; represent functions numerically, algebraically, and graphically; solve problems involving applications of functions; investigate inverse functions; and develop facility in determining equivalent algebraic expressions. Students will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step problems.
This course will take place during the month of August and the delivery of the course material relies on technology to establish a live daily connection between the teacher and the students. Students will work in groups or as a whole class interacting with the teacher and their peers using text, audio, video and screen sharing. This live correspondence will take place in the mornings (Eastern Daylight Time), from 8:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Students will continue with their independent work for 2.5 hours daily after their online time using the shared OneNote Binders, with access to video solutions from Appleby teachers and asynchronous chat with students and faculty. Feedback on homework is provided by the teacher as students work their way through the curriculum.
