Camp Homewood's sailing program is unique in Canada. Five campers on each vessel learn to work as a team to sail  27 foot Catalinas, with guidance from a certified skipper and bosun. We sail amongst the Discovery Islands and in world renowned Desolation Sound, while exploring lakes, trails and waterfalls. Youth camp in tents on shore every night. They learn how to row a dinghy, how to tie several knots, how to read a marine chart, how to sail a big sailboat, and they learn safe boating practices. Participation, fun, making new friends, learning about God and appreciating God's creation are our focus. We help campers become as proficient as they would like to be. There is no formal testing or certification. This is experiential learning at one's own pace.

Once we're out in the islands a typical day is as follows:

7:45am Rise, shine and start packing up

8:30 Breakfast and one crew does the dishes. Others load camping gear back onto the sailboats. Safety checks.

10:00 Set sail for adventure! See whales, seals or eagles! Marine chart review of the day's route plan and identification of hazards. Sailing games.

11:00 Onboard devotion, which is a discussion that usually starts with a story that points to God in some way

12:00 Lunch

Afternoon - anchor out, hike up trail to a lake or waterfall and swim and frolic! Or...swing off the mast...or, waterfight!

4:00pm Reach next campsite, anchor out, set up tents, explore or swim or play a game

5:30  Dinner! One crew washes the dishes.

8:00 Fireside - singing, skits, speaker

Mug-up and in bed by 10pm

Character Development: This program helps build the following traits

  • Responsibility: Every half hour a youth takes a turn at the helm and directing the crew. Even though the Skipper is on deck, the youth is responsible for the safe operation of the boat and the other six lives on board. Many youth have not been given this level of responsibility before. They thrive on it!
  • Religious faith: Our skippers and staff strive to model Christ-like living and respectful, caring relationships that point to God as being a powerful, positive force in our lives. Our daily onboard devotions and fireside talks introduce campers to Jesus and reinforce existing relationships with Him.
