About this Camp

Camp Robin Hood

Celebrating 75 years in 2021! Our beautiful, private, outdoor setting has 4 heated pools, a canoe pond and delivers a wide variety of traditional camp activities and a dedicated Sports Academy. Family owned and operated for 60 years, our well-trained staff provide each camper with an outstanding experience. Bus transportation is available and swim instruction is offered daily.

The 2021 Experience at Camp Robin Hood

Our decision to cancel the 2020 season was incredibly difficult. A summer without camp was unimaginable but following the science and our own philosophy on what the Camp Robin Hood experience should look and feel like, we are satisfied that we made that we made the right decision. We now feel an incredible energy to plan for 2021.

Today, the challenges of managing school, social circles, kid’s activities and work continue to be a daily battle with more road bumps, undoubtedly, along the way. We extend a huge “shout-out”, in particular, to all the principals, teachers, support staff, custodians, and school administrators who have been thrust on to the front lines in this very strange time in history. THANK YOU!

We are optimistic that the journey to celebrating our 75th Anniversary next summer will be a positive one. We will plan methodically and thoughtfully, working closely with the Ontario Camps Association (OCA) and the Ministry of Health to deliver a safe and worthwhile experience for both our campers and staff.

In fact, our camp co-owner and director, Sari Grossinger is taking on camp industry leadership as the Chair of the Day Camp Committee for the OCA COVID-19 Task Force. Camp Robin Hood will do what is required and what is directed to take care of your children. In fact, it will be our honour.

Please call us to learn more.

Reviews & Testimonials

Thanks for the opportunity
D.S. — Camp alumni

As I reflect on the summer, I wanted to extend my thanks to you guys again. Working at Camp Robin Hood has been something that I immensely look forward to and enjoy every year, and this year was no different. While really fun and an opportunity to generate endless memories, camp is also a place of growth, both professionally and personally. As I think about how much camp has allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and how much I’ve learned at camp, I am still reminded that I still have ample room to grow. As I think about the summer, about its successes and its challenges, it is very apparent that you two, and your team was there the entire way to support me, and guide me to success. Thank you very much for that. It is such an amazing feeling going to work every day, having it not feel like work at all, and to have such amazing people in my corner. I cannot truly express how much camp means to me and how grateful I am to you two to have been given the opportunities and experiences that I have had, the only thing I can do is say that I hope you’ll have me back to continue my growth and development so I can do my very best for you and the very best for my campers and staff to see them grow the way I have.

Thanks for the support

Hello Howie, I wanted to update you on my situation and thank you for helping me get there. I was accepted to both St. Matthew's University in Grand Cayman and Ross University in St. Kitts. I decided that I will be attending Ross University and I am leaving for the island in late December. I wanted to thank you, not only for the great reference letters you provided me with, but also helping me over the last five years to decide I wanted to continue on my path in becoming a veterinarian. You have provided me with the opportunity to work with children, adults, and animals (all clientele I will be dealing with in my career) in a very supportive environment. I have met many people at CRH and through Leadership that I will keep in contact with hopefully for the rest of my life. You have dealt with many teenagers (myself included) in very transitionary parts of their lives, and through direct and indirect actions, helped them become who they are today. Now, in part to yours and Sari's influence, I am now following my dream by attending veterinary school. Thank You.

Summer 2020 Decision
E.J. — Camp alumni

Dear Howie and Sari, Dee has just shared your devastating news with me that Camp Robin Hood has been cancelled for this Summer. I can’t begin to imagine the journey that you must have been on before you reached this decision. I have just watched your message to the campers whilst weeping and then went on to watch your promotional film of CRH which made me weep even more!! He was asking lots of questions about CRH and I found myself waxing lyrical about it and extolling it’s many virtues with the same sense of passion and loyalty that I talk to people about my special needs school that I have the privilege of working at and have done so for nearly 20 years now. I have such fond memories of my 2 Summers at Robin Hood. Actually, I am sure that my time supporting A.B. who was a special young man with Global Development Delay helped me in making my decision that working with young people with Special Needs was an area of work that I wanted to pursue long term...and I have. Definitely the right decision for me career wise. I have never looked back. Thank you CRH.

Thank You!

Hi Sari and Howie, As the last days of Camp approach I wanted to thank you both for giving E. another great summer! Today he received his 2 year milestone medal and he is over the moon, what a nice touch, it’s so appreciated. We started out the summer with E. dressing like a CRH staff member, to him loving swim thanks in part to Jake, Jacob and Erin, to enjoying his cabin and his counsellors throughout the summer and extended days and finally reaching his 2 year milestone. Thank you for doing what you do each and every day and for loving the children as if they were your own. See you next Summer M

With Thanks!

I just wanted to reach out to let you know how blown away we are with your camp and all of your staff. We were at the Family Night last night and met our kids counsellors and the kids gave us a lay of the land. You guys have an amazing facility and grounds, I couldn’t get over how big it is! Running a business ourselves I’m amazed the level of communication you offer, both Amanda and I are blown away at how efficiently you communicate with us the parents and how smooth and organized everything is. Congrats to you and your staff!! Thank you so much! B

The Summer of 2020
C.G. — Parent

We just read your letter about this summer. Even with this difficult news, we can still feel the warmth, transparency and the physical and emotional health of the campers and their families being your number one priority as it always has for as long as Jordan has been a CRH camper and his dad before him the 1970s. Jordan and our family have appreciated all the contact and connection to camp throughout the year and look forward to that moving forward. We stand with you knowing that this is the absolute right decision at this unprecedented time. We will show Jordan your message today and remind him that all the good things he loves about camp will be that much better upon everyone’s return. Wishing you, your family and your staff (with a special mention to Bev and the amazing nursing team) continued health and safety.

Director's Message

Sari & Howie Grossinger, Owners/Directors

Sending your child to summer camp is no small decision. (Trust us—we know.) Our family involvement began in 1961 when Sari’s parents, Larry & Pearl Bell took on the leadership of Camp Robin Hood. Married for 29 years, we have been working together at Robin Hood for well over 30 years. We pour our passion and know-how to make every camper, staff and parent experience the best it can be.

In 2019, we were thrilled and humbled to receive the Canadian Camping Association’s Jack Pearse Award of Honour for providing outstanding service to the national organization.

We are also the proud parents of 3 children who have benefited from the camp experience and now as young adults, are carving out their own professions. 28-year-old Jordanna, our current Camper Tracker who is also a Speech Language Pathologist in the York Region District School Board, 25-year-old Cole, a business operations lead at a successful tech company, and 21-year-old Zane, a 4th-year Kinesiology student and All-Canadian Volleyball player at Queen’s University.

Did you know that we are also the co-owners of Camp Walden? For the past 17 years, we have fostered the growth of many Robin Hood campers who have made the move from our country day camp to our wonderful overnight camp through our very popular Home & Away Program. Overall, creating safe places for positive growth, independence, and boatloads of fun are the guiding principles that make us so proud of what we do. Give us a call, we would love to tell you more.

Home & Away

Home & Away is a combined day and overnight camp experience. Campers in this program begin at Camp Robin Hood and then travel with their counsellors and cabin-mates to Camp Walden. Why should I consider Home & Away? This program is suited for campers being introduced to overnight camping for the first time; those who have commitments in the city; those who appreciate the security of travelling with a group and those who find making adjustments difficult. The program is designed for boys & girls who are currently in grades 2 and older. About Camp Walden: Set over 750 acres including a private lake, Walden’s activities aim to provide the perfect venue for the formation of a tightly bonded community. Sports, Camping, Waterfront, Theatre and Visual Arts, and camp wide programs fill a camper's day. Well-ventilated and spacious cabins, a large dining hall, and a fully equipped Health Centre are the facilities with which we endeavour to help campers feel comfortable to explore the full camp experience. Learn more about Camp Walden by visiting www.campwalden.ca. About Madawaska All-Sport: The Madawaska All-Sport program, is the perfect program for any athlete. Camp Robin Hood

The Camp Robin Hood program allows campers to experience a wide variety of activities during their stay at camp. Under the supervision of 2 well-trained counsellors, campers will participate in both cabin and specialty activities. During specialty activities, campers will be instructed by expert staff who have planned unique programs that enhance the camp experience. Munchies & Leppies (Pre-senior Kindergarten): These pre-schoolers get extra special care; after all, this is a formative time for these campers and individual attention goes a long way towards the development of good values. That is why our ratio of staff to campers in this area is approximately 1 to 4. These campers are offered almost every camp program, including canoe, that is offered to our older campers. Their programs are adjusted according to the attention span and the abilities of these young campers. Juniors, Intermediates and Seniors (Completed SK- Grade 7): Along with twice daily swim instruction, our counsellors make certain that our campers are exposed to the full range of programs we have to offer. The counsellors get to know their campers and their needs and design their program to meet those needs. As well, our Intermediate and Senior Campers can make individual program choices through Hobby Hubs (Intermediates) and Options (Seniors), which allow them to focus on specific activities that they enjoy doing more often. The Leadership Training Program: (Completed Grades 8 and 9): Our experience indicates that a truly effective Leadership Training Program strives to develop knowledge and skills through the presentation of theory and the involvement of hands-on learning. Participation in regularly scheduled placements in a variety of areas at camp plays an important role as well. We believe that our LITs (14 year olds) and our CITs (15 year olds) need to understand age characteristics, age appropriate activities, behaviour management techniques and motivational approaches to be successful. A mandatory 3 day retreat early in the summer, allow us to reach our program objectives. We feel that the core elements of our program can be covered in 6 weeks. However, all LITs and CITs can benefit from a full 8 week program where they choose their own area of focus in the last 2 weeks of camp.
