The Our Kids review of Sylvan Learning Oakville

Sylvan Learning Centres were founded in 1979, and the company has grown to include locations throughout North America. Sylvan’s reputation has grown as well, principally through the visibility of the locations and their association with effective academic tutoring. Still, there is more to Sylvan than perhaps most people may know, and the seasonal camps and programs are included in that. Yes, the focus can look somewhat academic at first glance—engineering, STEM, robotics, coding—though the feel of the camps is less formal, less academic, and more geared to gather children around topics and activities that they are passionate about, in addition to having fun. They will learn a lot, no doubt, though often the empowerment that the camps can bring is, for many families and kids, their principal value, and the thing that keeps them coming back year after year.

Stacey McCoy, Executive Director

STACEY MCCOY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND FRANCHISE OWNER

Stacey is the Executive Director and Centre Owner. She has been a teacher herself, for many years, and has experience teaching all around the world. Stacey is responsible for meeting Sylvan's high operating standards and ensuring that our families enjoy the many benefits that Sylvan has to offer.

TARA KOSTER, CENTRE DIRECTOR

Tara has over 15 years experience at Sylvan and first as a tutor and for many years as a Director of Education. As the Centre Director she oversees the operation of Sylvan in Oakville and ensures the educational integrity of our programs, managing and training our team of tutors. A former classroom teacher, Tara has a wealth of knowledge combined with passion to see every student achieve their academic potential. Tara graduated from McMaster University and The University of Calgary and has worked for Sylvan in both Alberta and in a number of locations in Ontario.When Tara isn’t at work, you will find her spending time with her two daughters, reading and enjoying the outdoors.

AMY SPIRITO, DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

As part of her steady rise to the Director of Education position, Amy has held every position at Sylvan and has enjoyed each one. Every day, she brings a great deal of knowledge, skill and passion to her work. Amy has taught in Ontario and in Alberta and always enjoys working with Early Elementary students. When Amy is about you will see hard work combined with laughter. She loves teaching and her students love to learn with her. Amy studied Early Childhood Education at Mohawk College in Hamilton and then received her English Degree and Teaching Degree from Nipissing University. When she is not at Sylvan, Amy is out walking with her dog or reading the latest mystery novel!

Math at Sylvan
Our daughter has been with Sylvan for 3 months in the Math Edge program and we've seen a significant improvement in both her skills and confidence. I would definitely recommend Sylvan to anyone whose child needs the extra push.

Summer at Sylvan
We decided to put our son in a few programs over the summer time to make sure he has a good start to the new school year come September. He has improved on his reading and Math and he feels more confident going into grade one. Friendly educators and flexible if there has to be a schedule change. Highly recommended.

What to Expect at Sylvan
The staff at the Sylvan Learning Centre in Oakville are truly the best of the best! Centre Director’s Amy and Tara are knowledgeable, hard-working and passionate educators that always go the extra mile to ensure every student is well cared for and every family’s individual needs are met. Along with the rest of the teaching staff, they have created a positive learning environment where students of all ages are able to develop and grow more confident with each session, and experience that learning can be fun firsthand. I highly recommend them to anyone.
