Expanding on the curriculum of Bits & Bytes, the DigiFab will allow participants to design their own projects to fabricate. This 2-week program will introduce both the technology and design software necessary to make their own projects. Students will work on individual and collective projects. Friends and family will be invited on the final day to see their work, and participants will practice their presentation skills.

Summer 2019
The theme for this summer’s DigiFab program is Drones in the City. We will explore the potential of this disruptive technology and how the city design might respond. Participants will design a city collectively (both physically and digitally), and will build their own racing drone that they will be able to take home.

Our final project for this session is a drone racing track (city) with an augmented reality building skin. We will design and construct the city on a smaller scale and work in teams to create a full track / city. Digital modelling will be created in the freeware Tinkercad. We will use the freeware Augmented to view the building skins. Physical modelling will be made with thin MDF that will be fabricated on our CNC router. Participants will glue, nail, and paint pieces. We will be building the DJI Tello drone kit and learning how to fly drones which takes practice. As we combine the drones and the track/city, we will reevaluate our track/ city design and reconfigure as needed. Throughout the week, we will have athletic time (see schedule below) and have tours of the fabrication workshops with demonstrations on the laser cutter, 3D printer and CNC router.  We will also have special guests including our Masters students, professors, and professionals to speak on drones and design.

Participants will leave the program with the DJI Tello drones to continue the fun on their own. Participants will get to design and keep their own laser cut keychain.

PLEASE NOTE: Participants will need to bring a cell phone or tablet in order to get the drone’s eye view and to pilot the drone. We will have some tablets available but quantities will be limited.  If the aforementioned drone products are unavailable, an equivalent substitute will be provided.

This summer program is designed for all students aged 12-14 years old (grades 7-9) with an interest in design, technology, art, science, and engineering.

The future of work is constantly evolving but despite these changes, there will always be a need for designers. The Daniels Faculty has been teaching design thinking for over century and a quarter. This intensive 2-week workshop gives students an opportunity to engage with the latest digital technologies, and to develop their design skills in a post-secondary environment.

The program runs daily from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Extra care will be available from 8:00am to 9:00am and from 4:00pm to 5:00pm. Please note that parents will be welcome to join our showcase each Friday at 3:00pm.

Nicholas Hoban is a designer and fabricator based in Toronto. As the Coordinator of John H. Daniels Digital Fabrication Lab, Nicholas oversees faculty fabrication research projects and the operational oversight of the digital fabrication facilities. Read More.

Nene Brode is the Manager, External Relations and Outreach rejoining the Dean's Office in September 2018. In 2016, she founded the V4Lab, a summer youth STEAM program after establishing the architectural science day camp. From working on the development of the Digital Media Experience Lab, to creating the V4Lab youth camp program showcasing work at the Ontario Science Centre, Nene has been a connector and collaborator fostering community engagement. Kian Hosseinnia is a fourth-year undergraduate student studying architecture and philosophy at the University of Toronto. Along with his studies, Kian has collaborated with students and professionals on a number of built and research projects. The built projects include Float, an outdoor interactive project built in the summer of 2015 with Situate | Design | Build at 401 Richmond, Toronto; and Aperture, the winning proposal for the building of a temporary parklet for Café Mosaic in Edmonton, Alberta in the summer of 2017. Kian is currently a teaching assistant and has published a paper on contemporary philosophy and architecture titled "Stranger Thoughts: Log’s Disorienting Phenomenology” with Professor Matthew Allen."
