The Our Kids review of Sans Souci Riding Centre INC.

Founded in 1970, Sans Souci, as the name suggests, has provided worry-free programming for more than five decades. Owners Carolyn and Don Sedgwick have a long involvement in the equestrian world, and bring a high level of professionalism to the programs. It’s about learning skills, yes, but—as with any quality camp—it’s also about joining a community and being granted a window onto another culture. For campers who attend in part to grow their language skills, there’s the linguistic culture. Even better, perhaps, is the equestrian culture expressed here, one of care, patience, stewardship, and the values of participation. Safety is rightly part of it, though in this setting, it comes as a corollary of respect—respecting the animals, peers, and oneself. Also as with any camp, the activities are in service of something greater. At Sans Souci those are growth and confidence. The staff and directors come directly from the Sans Souci program, which is a great sign of its health. That the children of the owners have now taken staff roles is a nice sign, too. It’s truly a family affair, whether born into the Sans Souci community, or joining for the first time.
