Director's Message

director

Marc Johnson, Business Manager 'Pooh Bear'

My name is Marc Johnson and I’m honored to be the Business Manager of Oneida Baptist Camp. I need to stop right there and already correct myself. Most people associated with Oneida, might not even know my name. During the months of June, July and August I normally answer to ‘Pooh Bear’.  I have been blessed to be serving at Oneida now for the past twenty- six summers. Through those years whether serving as a leader, co-director or Business Manager three things have always remained the same (besides chicken burgers on Sundays): the fun, safe environment and God’s everlasting love for us!

I take great pride in knowing that Oneida welcomes everyone to our camp without judgement. I have had many parents over the years express to me how grateful they were to send their children to Oneida, knowing that they would hear about God in a safe, non-judgemental environment.

Back when Oneida was found (1950), they were very clear on how they wanted to provide safe and affordable Christian camping for the children in teens in Southern Ontario. 68 years later, we continue to honour that statement. Oneida is blessed to have many donations to allow us to lower the registration below cost. Outside of a twelve/fourteen paid staff, Oneida is supported only by volunteers (Program Directors, leaders, maintenance crew).

We keep the weekly programs Christ-centered, fun and appropriate for the age bracket each week. I’m always excited to see children come to Oneida and experience three things. The first would be hearing God’s Word. This would be in a way that would be very interactive and engaging (campfire, Bible Studies, vesper point). The second would be having campers try something new. Maybe it could be jumping in a canoe for the first time or attempt archery. I just love when kids find out how good they are at something they never knew they could do. The final thing would be making new friends. Some relationships that are formed at Oneida, turn into lifelong friendships.

I’m already excited for the summer of 2019. Too see old friends coming back, but more the thought of new children/teens experiencing Oneida of the first time. In a life that is now so busy and keeping us away from people. Oneida hits the pause button on “life” and gets our heads out of the screens. For a week, children come to know and experience God’s love creation on the shores of Lake Erie.

Come join us this summer and be amazing on what Oneida has to offer.

Your in Christ,

Marc Johnson ‘Pooh Bear’

How Camp Shaped MEexpand

I first started going to Camp Oneida when I was 5. I am now 20 and have not skipped a summer, and I wouldn’t want to change it for the world. As mentioned before Camp Oneida has been my home away from home for the past 15 years. Something I will never take for granted are the relationships that I made when I was 12 years old  and 8 years later they are stronger than ever. Camp has shaped me into who I am today through my cabin leaders, the staff and the friends I made. My favourite memory at camp is the Bible study’s and this played a huge role in my faith growing up and it has made me who I am today. As I got older ,I was blessed to have the opportunity to be a cabin leader. While in this role I had the opportunity to lead other kids in faith and do my best in being able to give kids the incredible experience that I had. After being a leader, I wanted to be able to do more, so the following summer I applied to work on staff. In doing this i not only gained work experience but also the ultimate summer experience in that I got to spend it with some of the previous staff of whom I looked up to and I had the privilege of working alongside those who inspired me to be who I am. Working on staff had always been a dream of 5 year old me and it exceeded all of my expectations. Yes you are in a kitchen but I’m doing so I continued to learn all the campers names allowing me to build a relationship with them. This lead to them asking me questions during Bible study and participating in electives with them and that was just one week and I worked for the entire camp season. My prayer is that at least one kid left camp with good memories and a strive to do good things.
