Little Mountain Learning Academy’s ultimate success is measured when all students aspire to an independent inquiry,
develop a thirst for knowledge, and are instilled in the ability to take responsibility to further their own learning.
The Grade 8-10 Holistic English Program is designed for self-directed, self-motivated learners. Students in this program develop enhanced reading, writing, presentation, research, and critical thinking skills. The outcome of study in this program is confident learners who are well-equipped to succeed in any North American secondary academic program.
Grade 8-10 Holistic English students at Little Mountain will hone skills in the following areas:
1.1 To demonstrate understanding through written expression.
1.2 To demonstrate analysis and thought through the written expression.
1.3 To explore, and practice the modes of discourse.
1.4 To complete research independently.
1.5 To make connections between texts.
1.6 To select the appropriate method of written communication.
Literary Comprehension and Analysis:
2.1 To use and identify literary devices.
2.2 To read the meaning behind the text.
2.3 To form a personal hypothesis based on text.
2.4 To identify themes, motifs, and patterns.
3.1 To discuss complex, and abstract concepts.
3.2 To identify political figures and historical events.
3.3 To respectfully discuss controversial issues.
3.4 To identify multiple perspectives in an issue
3.5 To look at media sources critically.
4.1 To express insights and opinions fluently and confidently.
4.2 To ask critical and insightful questions.
4.3 To prepare well-organized and aesthetically pleasing presentations.
Novel studies will occur three times per school year and are 4-7 weeks long. Selected novels will be read in class and
assigned for home reading.
