Enhance reading comprehension and communication skills while reading The Magic Tree House Collection (La cabane magique)!

About this course

Welcome to the French Reading Club! This course is designed for students who are in Grades 5 & 6 and who already have a foundation of the French language. Students will be travelling through both time and space as they read 3 chapter books from The Magic Tree House Collection in French (La cabane magique). This series follows the adventures of two children, Tom at Léa, who travel to different eras through a magic tree house. Let’s join Tom and Léa on their adventure this term and travel with them to a forest in the Amazon, the ice age and the moon through the following books:

  • Perdus en forêt amazonienne
  • Le Sorcier de la Préhistoire
  • Le voyage sur la lune

What you'll learn

Each class, students will be reading one-two chapters from the novel together. We will focus on reading fluency, reading comprehension, inferencing, text analysis and oral communication (in French). Particular emphasis will be placed on pronunciation and vocabulary acquisition. We will also focus on formulating written (and oral) responses to questions.

Each lesson will be divided into three main components:

  • Vocabulary Acquisition (30 minutes)
  • Finding definitions
  • Vocabulary game (such as unscramble the words, for example)
  • Reading of the book (1-2 Chapters) (30 minutes)
  • Discussion (30 minutes)
  • Formulate written responses
  • Discuss the text verbally
  • Make predictions
