About this camp

Camp Nokomis

Camp Nokomis is a residential children's summer camp located just outside of Fergus, Ontario on Belwood Lake. It is home to boys in July and girls in August, 7 to 16 years of age. Nokomis offers supervised swimming in a heated pool, plus canoeing, kayaking, frisbee golf, soccer, pickleball, water regattas, archery, fishing, creative games, arts & crafts, and initiative tasks.

The Our Kids review of Camp Nokomis

Camp Nokomis is one of those little gems of the camping world. The program was established in 1957, and has carried happily along its way ever since. The goals are those of traditional camping, namely to get kids working together, having fun together, as they grow into a sense of themselves and their place in the world. Values are a big part of it, as they should be. The leadership is the best advertisement for the camp, with Jay and Vicki Haddad being the definition of camp people. They do it because they love it, and it shows. Sunny summer days, spent outdoors, with others. This is what it’s all about. The fact that it’s fairly close by is a nice plus, too.

Jay and Vicki Haddad, Senior Directors

This is our 24th summer running a children's summer camp! Camp Bellaleo was closed in 2010 and we changed our name to Camp Nokomis (Anishanaabe meaning "my grandmother") and we are on Belwood Lake, in the Grand River system, only 92 km from our house in Toronto.

Our focus is on leadership and sensitivity training, preaching the gospel of "respect" for all living things! We have not hired outside our camp since 2001 - all our leaders come up "through the ranks" from camper to Leader-in-Training to counsellor to Senior Staff!

To be able to create your own magic, promote your own philosophy and watch children grow into fantastic leaders, adults and models - is truly a gift!

As we say around the flagpole each and every night: "thanks for the day, comrades"!

I HAVE A CHILD THAT'S UNHAPPY!expand

She wants to come and live with Jay, Vicki, Zak and Noah. She'd like to be referred to as Payton Haddad. The fact that I carried her in my womb is apparently neither here nor there. In other words, she's a traitor.

Aside from that, everything is fine! She had a FANTASTIC time and she'll definitely be back next year; she really wants to go for a month!

So, just a quick email to say a BIG thank-you AGAIN!

Thanks guys!

Katharine Maclean

Thank Youexpand

October 2014 posted on our Nokomis Facebook page: "Thank you Jay Haddad and your team of amazing counsellors for making our daughter's first sleepover camp experience an amazing one. It is a huge leap of faith to send your child to a residential camp without having had the "camping" experience oneself. Zara is still talking about camp. Everything reminds her of a moment, a friend, an experience. And I love it. I gobble up the small details she shares as they unfold and every day there have been new ones.I am amused by the songs and cheers she sings around the house and delighted that she has a new-found confidence and sense of responsibility that she proudly flaunts. I can see with my eyes and feel with my heart how happy she was there, what a positive impact this experience has been and that Camp Nokomis is now part of her story. She can't wait to return next summer."
