About this camp

Camp Artaban

Camp Artaban, accredited by the BC Camps Association, has been providing Christian Camping since 1923. Located on Gambier Island, Artaban is described as “awesome” by youth and “paradise” by adults. Set on over 47 pristine acres with access to crown land; natural exploration, outdoor adventure and all levels of hiking provide a wilderness experience that is just a half an hour boat ride from Horseshoe Bay.

All of our programs offer “Challenge by Choice” activities. Campers can choose for themselves how far they want to be challenged in each area. Activities could include program areas and many other organized activities tailored to each camping age group.

The Our Kids review of Camp Artaban

Operated since 1923, Camp Artaban may be the oldest consistently run camp in the province. Located on Gambier Island, in the early days campers arrived via steamship, dropped at a floating dock from which they rowed into shore. The island is more accessible today, though retains all of the things that have made it popular with artists and photographers through the years: ancient cedars and a quiet that can feel a world away from Vancouver and then some, despite being only a half-hour ferry ride away. The camp was developed under the leadership of an Anglican bishop to reflect that faith tradition and its values, something that remains today. (The name is that of the fourth member of the biblical magi, though he doesn’t arrive in time with the others, as stops to help needy people all along his way to Jerusalem.) The camp rightly makes use of all the natural resources that surround it, set on 50 acres that abuts extensive crown land. It offers age appropriate adventure, as well as specialty sessions, including a girls’ camp and leadership training. The activities are exactly, and delightfully, what you'd expect from a traditional camp in Canada—hiking, woodslore, tripping, crafts, swimming, and soaking up the spirit of the pristine setting.

The Next Generationexpand

As a kid, camp was the most important week of my summer. I wasn't a sporty, outdoorsy kid. I probably would never have been to a summer camp if it hasn't been for Camp Artaban having a fine arts camp. Camp is a special place for a lot of people and the diverse camps offered provided people of all ages and interests an opportunity to have a camp experience.

It's hard not to fall in love with camp. It's beautiful and exciting with so much to do and so many wonderful people. I love the history. I love the spiritual connection I feel when I set foot on camp grounds, but especially in the chapel. At camp I feel loved and supported. I made lifelong friends and had experiences I never dreamed I would have. It's hard to put into words because the thing I love the most is the way I feel when I'm there or when I think about being there. I want nothing more than for my daughter to get to experience the same thing. The first time I took her up with me to visit for the day I felt like I was going to burst from excitement. She has been up twice, just for the day, and I love the way her little eyes take everything in. I can tell she feels that it is a special place just from those short visits. I can't wait until I am able to get her up to an actual camp to get the real experience. I just know she'll love it as much as I do.
