The Our Kids review of Ryerson Performance Youth Camps

The location couldn’t be better, and that’s true for the facilities as well. Drama, to some extent, is about dreaming, and having the use of professional theatre spaces only enhances that. Further, the staff is expert, as is the administration, allowing for high-quality instruction and productions. The levelling allows kids to get used to the idea of being on stage, and then grow into an appreciation what they can bring to it. The location and program support, too, contribute to a very professional package that, is, understandably, very highly regarded.

Stories

Inspiring Children in the Arts

I was initially somewhat hesitant about sending my daughter to a camp for 3 whole weeks right in the heart of downtown Toronto, but I am so happy we took the chance and enrolled her. I felt immediately confident in their safety procedures at drop off and pick up. And after a glowing report from my child at the end of day 1 I couldn't have been more pleased. The staff were exceptional and I think a huge part of the success is the high staff to camper ratio. The performance at the end was amazing to see what they accomplished after just three short weeks. We are already talking about enrolling her in the camp again next year as it was most certainly the highlight of her summer so far! Thank you RTS -you certainly know how to inspire children when it comes to the arts.

I learned so much and had a lot of fun!

I had a great time at the teen acting camp, I learned so much and had a lot of fun!

I have been to a couple other drama/acting camps in the past, and Ryerson's Teen Acting Academy (I'm going to call it TAA for now) is definitely the best I have been to.  At some other camps, there is a more competitive environment, and there are a few campers who are the "main characters"- meaning that they are the ones who participate in everything, and get all the big parts, kind of like the popular kids in movies about high school. The big thing that impressed me about the TAA is the feeling of community, and how everyone supports each other. There aren't "main characters" at TAA, everyone supports and respects each other. Because of that, it feels like a safe space where you can explore new things and put yourself out there without the fear of being judged. I've never been to a camp with such a positive/supportive environment, and it's been really great.

One of the reasons I wanted to come to TAA was to learn more about acting, and the industry. I have learned more about both in the last two weeks than I have ever been taught before.

All of the counsellors and staff at TAA have been so amazing! Everyone is so kind, and helpful, and supportive. I think it's really cool how a lot of the counsellors actually work in the industry, or they are students at Ryerson (or both). I learned so much from everyone! I also felt like everyone genuinely cared about us and wanted to see us succeed. Everyone put in so much work to make TAA feel like a welcoming community.

Wonderful Learning Experience

Our family cannot thank you enough for the wonderful learning experience this gave us all! We are thrilled with the support from the counsellors, from other students, and the final production was incredible! I give you my highest commendations and I will look for ways to send my child again. Out of purely selfish reasons, I will advertise you AFTER I sign up my child, as I understand you were sold out quite quickly. Congratulations to your team of leaders and staff members, your have put on a great program for children and a marvelous production - all children were so proud of their achievement!
