Outdoor Education

Outdoor education comes in as wide a variety as your imagination allows. Outdoor learning usually includes uniquely seasonal activities like canoeing, outdoor rock climbing, rope climbing or other rope games available at many summer camps. More specialized outdoor learning experiences are found in wilderness camps or adventure camps as well as day camps like zoo camps and horse camps.

Experts such as Richard Louv and David Suzuki have decried today's youth's increasing alienation from the natural world and its effect on the way we view the outside world. This nature deficit disorder may even be a contributing factor in climate change as people are increasingly unaware of the effect of human activity.

Outdoor education is valuable for kids who are interested in pursuing learning in the natural or environmental sciences or who simply love the outdoors. It is also very valuable for kids who are academically inclined, of course, as it can provide an important counterpoint to schoolwork, sitting at a computer or playing video games.

There are several types of camps that specialize in specific areas of learning. These include the following:

  • Animal camps or zoo camps provide a lot of unique outdoor activities where kids can interact with and learn about animals from around the world. These are most definitely a unique outdoor education experience that kids will crave.
  • Horse camps are focused on horse-related activities. This unique outdoor learning experience is ideal for kids who love horses. While the focus is on horseback riding, there are likely many other activities available to break up the day.
  • Wilderness camps offer out-trips into the deep woods of Northern Ontario or Quebec. These can be several weeks long, in fact, although the length varies. Teens gain experience with wilderness survival, grow personally in a number of unique ways and will likely encounter varied wildlife. This unique camp experience is immensely rewarding, and provides intense outdoor education.
  • Camps such as golf camps, soccer, baseball and sailing camps also provide a lot of time outdoors where kids will learn new skills in the activity of focus, as well as many other outdoor activities.

Outdoor education is a byproduct of many types of summer camps, including both day and overnight camps. A byproduct of outdoor learning is an increased understanding of the environment, issues like climate change and an alleviation of what Richard Louv has famously called nature deficit disorder.
