Lewis Baumander, Owner

Over the past 43 years Lewis has directed over 100 plays across Canada in such theatres as the Tarragon and the Manitoba Theatre Centre (including Hamlet with Keanu Reeves). He built and ran Skylight Theatre in Earl Bales Park for 10 years where he directed many Shakespeare plays and other classical theatre pieces. He has also directed Television and a Feature Film. He has been a casting consultant on several TV series and an on-set Acting Coach for more than a hundred TV episodes and four Feature Films. Lewis has directed, taught and/or coached actors such as Nina Dobrev, Malcolm McDowell and Stacey Keach.

Lewis has begun coaching and teaching his fourth generation of working actors including Georgina Reilly (Murdoch Mysteries, Heartland, Saving Hope), Ellen Wong (The Carrie Diaries, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World), Cristine Prosperi (Open Heart, Degrassi), Nahanni Johnstone (Minority Report FOXTV, Open Heart, Orange Is The New Black), K.C. Collins (Saving Hope, RoboCop, Lost Girl) & Noah Danby (Killjoys TV series, Bitten, Defiance). He has worked closely with many actors on such shows such as Degrassi: The Next Generation, The Strain, Hannibal, Beauty & the Beast, Bitten, The Book of Negroes, Defiance, Reign, Hemlock Grove, Living in my Car, Life With Boys, Being Human, Debra, Lost Girl, Combat Hospital, King, Highland Gardens, Republic of Doyle, Being Erica and Played among many, many others. Three Gemini nomination performances have arisen out of this group: Romina D’ugo, Shane Kippel and Nahanni Johnstone .

He directed the annual Industry Show for The Humber School of Comedy at Second City for 4 years, which starred such great comedians as Andrea Martin (SCTV), and Don Ferguson (Air Farce). He also taught at the University of Manitoba, University of Windsor, Ryerson, Humber, Sheridan and Seneca College.

Lewis founded the Lewis Baumander Acting Studio where he teaches weekly group classes year-round, and coaches actors individually on a daily basis. Lewis considers himself fortunate to have had so many talented and special actors pass through his Studio. He takes no credit. He just feels honoured to have been a part of their success.

Lewis is also the owner of Casting Central, having purchased it in 2012. Casting Central is Toronto’s full service casting facility making it the one stop location for all your casting needs. www.castingcentral.ca

Agent Testimonialexpand

“Actors enjoy rigorous workouts: stretching and reaching new heights with Lewis. Function, form, and facts are more than baseline with him. They are the foundation he lays for actors to succeed. Lewis Baumander’s diagnostic and practical approach to training actors is pivotal to the performers’ growth. Actors who are committed, achieve results. Those who are committed in partnership with Lewis achieve greater results.”

Nina Dobrev Testimonialexpand

“I have taken Lewis’ classes and worked with him one on one. He encourages and shows his students how to shed the ‘acting techniques’, formulas and bad habits they may have acquired and gives his students the freedom to just be. A fresh start, free of judgement and open for opportunity. I have learned and become so much more comfortable and confident in my work, because Lewis has encouraged me to search for the truth in each character. To think, breathe, and create the reality of a human being that is not yourself, through yourself. Lewis is an incredible coach and extraordinary person, my experience working with him has been wonderful. Thank You Lewis!”

"Thank you so much for this wonderful session!  Emilia loved, loved the acting class and ability to express herself as an actress!  I think she did amazing job and we are so grateful to have a such a wonderful teacher as Marcia to help us grow and give us guidance. She is an amazing teacher and has that ability to push her students to excel in their way to success and self confidence.  We are looking forward to the next round of classes with so many talented students and the staff of LB studio."

Casting Director Testimonialexpand

“We have watched Lewis coach and teach for many years now. He is a consummate professional and seems to make the actors feel at ease as they hone their craft. What is uniquely great about Lewis’ approach is that he helps the actor find their own voice. He may influence their choices but when they come into the audition room, they bring a genuine performance that is entirely theirs. We wholeheartedly endorse his studio, his approach and all his teachers.”
